This medication should not be used in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis due to increased risk of death. Suicidal thoughts or actions may occur during treatment, especially at the beginning of treatment or during dose adjustments, so patients' conditions should be closely monitored. There is a risk of serious side effects such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome; if symptoms such as high fever, muscle rigidity, or changes in mental status occur, stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical attention. Long-term use may lead to tardive dyskinesia, an irreversible movement disorder, so it should be used at the minimum effective dose for the shortest duration and consideration given to discontinuation at the appearance of symptoms. This medication can raise blood sugar levels, so patients with diabetes or those at risk for hyperglycemia should regularly check their blood sugar levels and monitor symptoms. Patients with allergies to this medication or its additives or those taking certain medications should not use this drug, and special caution should be exercised for patients with impaired kidney or liver function, as well as for patients with diabetes. Common side effects to expect include drowsiness, nausea, anxiety, insomnia, muscle rigidity, etc.; these should be discussed with a healthcare professional if severe. This medication can increase prolactin levels, leading to breast pain, milk secretion, menstrual irregularities, and sexual dysfunction, so these symptoms should be reported if they occur. Metabolic changes such as weight gain, increased blood pressure, and lipid abnormalities can also occur, necessitating regular health check-ups and monitoring.
