Precautions

This medication should not be used in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis due to an increased risk of death. It may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so patient status should be closely monitored, especially at the start of treatment and during dosage changes. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a serious side effect, may occur; if symptoms such as high fever, muscle rigidity, or altered mental status appear, the medication must be stopped immediately and medical treatment should be sought. Long-term use may cause tardive dyskinesia, which is an irreversible movement disorder; therefore, it is important to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration and consult a healthcare professional if symptoms appear. Blood sugar may increase, so diabetic patients should periodically check their blood sugar levels, and patients at risk for diabetes should also undergo regular blood sugar tests. Patients with hypertension, heart disease, renal or liver dysfunction, or a history of seizures should be cautious when taking this medication, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should be careful as well. Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, anxiety, and insomnia, so caution should be taken when driving or operating machinery. During treatment, regular monitoring of weight changes, blood pressure, blood sugar, lipid levels, and prolactin levels should be conducted to check for side effects. If there is an allergic reaction to this medication or if it is taken in combination with specific drugs, the risk of side effects may increase, so patients must inform their healthcare providers about other medications they are taking.
