Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to assist adults with type 2 diabetes in controlling blood sugar levels, complementing dietary and exercise regimens. It is particularly effective for those whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled, and can also be used in patients with confirmed cardiovascular disease. Caution should be observed according to the guidelines provided by a specialist when using this medication. It helps improve blood sugar levels and aids in diabetes management.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet once a day, taken twice a day. The dosage should be determined considering each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, without exceeding empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg. If blood sugar control is insufficient, it is recommended to take empagliflozin 5 mg twice daily along with the existing dose of metformin. If tolerability is good, the dose may be increased to empagliflozin 25 mg (total daily amount).
This medication is for the treatment of diabetes, with the active ingredients being empagliflozin and metformin. Severe lactic acidosis, a rare side effect, can occur when taking this medication and requires great caution. Lactic acidosis can lead to a hazardous condition from excessive lactic acid in the body, which can potentially be fatal. Additionally, when taken with other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia should be noted. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute kidney issues, severe infections, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, or other serious conditions. Furthermore, it is recommended that pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding women avoid this medication for safety. Patients taking this medication should have regular kidney function and blood tests, with more frequent tests required for the elderly or patients with slightly reduced kidney function. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, and hypoglycemia, and consultation with medical personnel is necessary if symptoms appear. Particularly during symptoms of dehydration, vomiting, or diarrhea, caution should be exercised due to the risk of fluid depletion, and in such cases, medication may be temporarily suspended. The use of this medication should be stopped for a period around surgery or imaging tests involving iodinated contrast and should not be resumed until kidney function is confirmed normal. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while taking this medication. This medication is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established in children. Elderly patients should be particularly careful as they have an increased risk of renal impairment and fluid loss. In cases of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis exists, and immediate medical attention is necessary.
