Blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to assist in blood glucose control for adults with type 2 diabetes by combining empagliflozin and metformin. It is most effective when taken together with dietary and exercise therapies and is suitable for patients whose blood glucose is not adequately controlled. Caution is required, especially for patients with cardiovascular diseases, so it is important to follow professional guidance. This medication helps improve blood glucose control, thus aiding in diabetes management.
The recommended dosage for adults is one tablet, taken twice daily. The dosage should not exceed the total of 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin per day. For patients who cannot achieve adequate blood glucose control with metformin alone or in conjunction with other medications like insulin, the recommended dosage is 5 mg of empagliflozin taken twice daily (10 mg total) along with the usual dose of metformin. If tolerance is good and additional blood glucose control is needed, the empagliflozin dose may be increased.
This medication can cause a rare but serious metabolic side effect called severe lactic acidosis; therefore, it should not be administered to patients with impaired kidney function or those with serious infections, dehydration, or cardiovascular disease. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is used with other diabetes medications, so patients taking insulin or sulfonylureas should closely monitor blood glucose changes. Patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment, those with acute kidney injury, patients with acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, patients with acute heart failure, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and specific patient groups should not use this medication. Regular monitoring of kidney function and serum creatinine levels is important before starting or during treatment with this medication to monitor kidney status. Patients at risk of fluid loss or elderly patients and those who are dehydrated should be especially cautious as this medication can lower blood pressure or cause dehydration. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections, so if infection symptoms appear, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and those who are breastfeeding should not take this medication. Patients preparing for surgery should stop taking this medication 48 hours prior and resume after kidney function has returned to normal following surgery. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while using this medication. During treatment, closely observe blood glucose control status and any unusual symptoms, and consult a doctor immediately if any concerning symptoms arise. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 18 years of age, so this medication is not recommended. In case of overdose, serious side effects such as lactic acidosis may occur, so immediate treatment at a medical institution is necessary if suspected. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in the original container to maintain quality.
