Control of blood sugar in Type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 diabetes through the combined action of empagliflozin and metformin. It is particularly effective when used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy. It is also administered to adults with Type 2 diabetes who have cardiovascular disease and whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled. This medication helps manage blood sugar and may assist in reducing cardiovascular risk, so it is important to carefully review the instructions and take it accordingly. It is used to improve patients' blood sugar control and cardiovascular health.
The recommended dose of this medication is 1 tablet once, 2 times a day. The total daily dose should not exceed 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin, taking into account individual treatment regimens, efficacy, and tolerability. If blood sugar control is insufficient, administer 5 mg of empagliflozin 2 times a day (total of 10 mg) plus the existing dose of metformin. If tolerability is good and additional blood sugar control is needed, the empagliflozin dosage can be increased to 25 mg (total daily dose).
This medication may cause a rare but serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so it should not be used in cases of poor kidney function, severe infections, or dehydration. Additionally, it should not be administered to individuals with allergies to any of its components, patients with Type 1 diabetes, acute heart failure, pregnant or breastfeeding women. This medication requires dosage adjustments based on kidney function, so routine kidney function tests should be conducted before and during treatment. Using this medication in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylurea medications may increase the risk of hypoglycemia, so dosage adjustments may be necessary when used together. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital infections, so if any related symptoms arise, consultation with medical staff should occur immediately. During treatment, caution should be exercised with dehydration, hypotension, or fluid loss, especially in elderly patients or those with cardiovascular conditions who need careful monitoring. Patients with impaired liver function or those who excessively consume alcohol should avoid this medication. If surgery is planned or iodinated contrast studies are to be performed, the medication should be discontinued for a period of time and can be resumed only after kidney function has returned to normal. This medication can lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular monitoring of vitamin B12 levels is necessary for long-term use. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers should not take this medication, and it is not recommended for children as its safety and effectiveness have not been established.
