This medication is used to assist with weight loss and maintenance in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older. It is particularly effective in patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or in overweight patients with a BMI of 27 or higher and less than 30, who have weight-related comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Additionally, it is administered to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with confirmed cardiovascular disease and a BMI of 27 or higher. The medication is also recommended as an adjunct therapy for adolescents over 12 years of age with a weight exceeding 60 kg and classified as obese based on the adult standard BMI of 30. This medication is used as a treatment to assist with weight management in conjunction with diet and exercise.
Start at 0.25 mg once weekly and gradually increase over 16 weeks reaching a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once weekly. The dosage escalation schedule is 0.25 mg for weeks 1 to 4, 0.5 mg for weeks 5 to 8, 1 mg for weeks 9 to 12, and 1.7 mg for weeks 13 to 16, with a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg. Dosing above 2.4 mg once weekly is not recommended. Administer subcutaneously, regardless of meals.
Adolescents aged 12 and older should follow the same dosage escalation schedule as adults. The maintenance dose is administered once weekly at 2.4 mg or until the maximum tolerable dose is reached.
