Precautions
This medication helps in controlling blood sugar.
However, there are several important precautions to be taken when using this medication.
First, this medication can rarely cause a dangerous condition called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis occurs when there is a build-up of lactic acid in the body, which can be life-threatening if severe, so consult a doctor immediately if symptoms appear.
Additionally, when this medication is used with insulin or other diabetes medications, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood glucose levels should be closely monitored, and medication dosages adjusted if necessary.
This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function, patients in a dehydrated state, patients with serious infections or heart issues, and those with acute myocardial infarction.
Also, pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as individuals with certain genetic disorders, should not take this medication.
Before administration, fluid status and kidney function must be evaluated, and special caution is necessary for the elderly or individuals with slightly impaired kidney function.
This medication can increase urination, possibly leading to decreased fluid levels or low blood pressure, so those at risk for hypotension should frequently check their blood pressure and fluid status.
During treatment, genital and urinary infections may occur, and if these symptoms appear, immediate treatment is required.
Furthermore, this medication can lower vitamin B12 levels, so it is advisable to check vitamin B12 status during long-term use.
Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided while on this drug.
If undergoing surgery or iodine contrast tests, administration should be temporarily halted, and it should be restarted only after confirming normal kidney function.
In case of overdose, appropriate treatment is required, and while this medication does not significantly affect driving or machine operation abilities, dizziness may occur, so caution is advised.
Finally, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container to maintain its quality.
