Precautions

This medication is for the treatment of diabetes and may very rarely cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening. Caution is required as hypoglycemia may occur when used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylureas. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infection, or conditions that may affect renal function such as acute myocardial infarction. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with certain genetic diseases, and patients undergoing dialysis should also not use this medication. Patients with reduced fluid volume or renal impairment should use this medication cautiously, and renal function and blood pressure should be regularly monitored before and during administration. This medication may cause side effects such as genital infections, urinary tract infections, hypoglycemia, reduced fluid volume, and ketoacidosis in some patients, so any symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Additionally, patients with impaired liver function have a higher risk of lactic acidosis and should avoid this medication. If iodine contrast tests are to be performed before or after taking this medication, it should be stopped 48 hours prior and resumed only after confirming normal renal function. Elderly patients or those with impaired renal function should adjust doses carefully and monitor renal function regularly. Excessive alcohol intake can increase the risk of adverse effects of this medication, so it should be avoided during treatment. This medication may cause Vitamin B12 deficiency, so serum B12 levels should be monitored during long-term use. In case of an overdose, medical attention should be sought immediately, and dialysis may be necessary. Dizziness may occur while driving or operating machinery during treatment with this medication, so caution is advised.
