Summary

Main use
Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
The recommended dosage is 1 tablet once, twice a day. The maximum recommended daily dosage for each component is 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. Patients who are not adequately controlled with metformin alone or with other medications such as insulin may take 5 mg of empagliflozin twice a day and can increase to a maximum of 25 mg if necessary. When switching to this medication from empagliflozin 10 mg (total daily dosage), the initial dosage remains the same for metformin. Dose adjustments for empagliflozin due to tolerability and the need for additional blood sugar control should also be considered (refer to precautions on 4. Adverse reactions and 6. Interactions). This medication should be taken alongside meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, do not double the dose at once; the missed dose is to be skipped.

Precautions

This medication helps control blood sugar. However, certain precautions should be taken while using it. First, it may cause a rare side effect of severe lactic acidosis, so individuals with impaired kidney function or liver issues should be particularly cautious. Second, when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications, there may be a risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar changes should be closely monitored. Third, patients with moderate to severe impaired kidney function or those with acute infections, dehydration, or heart failure should not use this medication. Fourth, before and after surgery or iodine contrast examinations, this medication should be discontinued for a period, and it should be resumed only after normal kidney function has been restored. Fifth, there may be an increased risk of urinary tract infections or genital infections; consult a doctor immediately if infection symptoms occur. Sixth, irregular meals, excessive exercise, and alcohol consumption may increase the risk of hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis; caution is advised. Seventh, it is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication. Eighth, elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function should have their kidney function regularly checked before and after taking this medication and adjust dosages if necessary. Finally, during treatment with this medication, regular blood tests and checks of physical condition should be conducted, and if any abnormal symptoms occur, medical personnel should be notified immediately.
