Treatment of mood disorders (depression, premenstrual dysphoric disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa
This medication is used to treat depression, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. In the case of depression, it alleviates the patient's persistent depressive state and various symptoms, showing effect within 5-6 weeks. For bulimia nervosa, it reduces binge eating and purging behaviors. It also significantly reduces symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, alleviating the distress in social or work life. In premenstrual dysphoric disorder, it helps ease periodic emotional instability and physical symptoms. However, it is important to regularly assess each patient's condition during long-term administration. This medication is used to improve the symptoms of these disorders.
Adults 1. Depression 1) Initial treatment: The initial dose is 20mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride orally once daily in the morning. In controlled clinical trials, doses of 20~80mg per day were administered. If no improvement is observed, an increase in dose may be considered after several weeks. Doses exceeding 20mg per day should be administered in 2 divided doses (morning and noon), and the maximum dose of 80mg per day should not be exceeded. The onset of an adequate antidepressant effect may be delayed until 4 weeks or longer after starting treatment. 2) Maintenance/continuation/extended treatment: There are no definitive data on how long patients should be treated with this medicine; however, psychopharmacologists recognize that acute symptoms of depression require drug treatment for several months or longer. It is not known whether the amount of antidepressant required to relieve symptoms is the same as that required to maintain or sustain stability. 2. Bulimia nervosa Administer 60mg of this medicine per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. Measure electrolyte levels before starting treatment. 3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder Administer 20~60mg of this medicine per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. 4. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Administer 20mg of this medicine per day. After 6 months of treatment, reassess whether continued treatment is necessary. Patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment, patients receiving multiple medications, elderly patients, and patients with comorbid diseases: Administer a lower dose or reduce the frequency of administration. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to age and symptoms. Switching from MAO inhibitors used to treat psychiatric disorders When discontinuing an MAO inhibitor used to treat a psychiatric disorder and starting treatment with this medicine, allow an interval of at least 14 days. Conversely, at least 5 weeks must elapse after discontinuing this medicine before starting an MAO inhibitor to treat a psychiatric disorder. Other MAO inhibitors such as linezolid or methylene blue Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start treatment with this medicine because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. For patients requiring treatment for a more urgent psychiatric condition, including hospitalization or other interventions, treatment should be considered. It may be necessary to urgently administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue to a patient already receiving this medicine. If no alternative to linezolid or intravenous methylene blue is available and the benefits of treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue are judged to outweigh the risk of serotonin syndrome in a particular patient, discontinue this medicine immediately and administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. Monitor the patient for symptoms of serotonin syndrome for 5 weeks after administering linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or until 24 hours after the last dose, whichever occurs first. Treatment with this medicine may be resumed 24 hours after the last dose of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. The risk associated with methylene blue administered by a non-intravenous route (oral tablets or local injection) or with intravenous doses of 1mg/kg or less is unclear. Nevertheless, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of emergency symptoms of serotonin syndrome with such use.
This medication is primarily used to treat psychiatric disorders such as depression. It may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults, so it must be administered with great caution in this age group. This medication should not be administered to patients with allergies to this drug or its additives, severe renal impairment, or those taking certain medications (MAO inhibitors). Patients with a history of seizures should take special care when using this medication, and if seizures occur or increase in frequency, treatment should be discontinued immediately. Patients with suicidal thoughts or unstable mental states require careful monitoring during the initial weeks after treatment starts. This medication can affect heart rhythm, so patients with heart disease or related risk factors should undergo an ECG before being administered. Patients with reduced liver or kidney function may need to have their dosage adjusted. Diabetic patients may be affected in their blood sugar control, so they should closely monitor their blood sugar levels and adjust their medication dosage if necessary. This medication may dilate pupils, so caution should be exercised in patients with high intraocular pressure or risk of glaucoma. Rarely, severe allergic reactions or skin rashes may occur, so if any abnormal symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately. Common side effects during treatment include headaches, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, diarrhea. Abruptly stopping this medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, sensory disturbances, sleep disorders, and anxiety, so the dosage should be gradually reduced according to a doctor's instructions. This medication can interact with other drugs, so be sure to inform the doctor of any medications being taken, and it is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor before using this medication. It is preferable not to administer this medication to children and adolescents, as its safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently confirmed in this population. Elderly patients may respond differently to the medication, so closer monitoring is needed during administration. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
