This medication is used to help improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can be administered as an adjunct to dietary and exercise therapy and is effective either alone or in combination with other medications. Caution is needed when administered to patients with cardiovascular diseases who have insufficient blood sugar control. Please consult your physician. This medication plays an important role in improving blood sugar control which is essential for diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dose of this medication for monotherapy and as an adjunct therapy with other blood sugar-lowering medications such as insulin is 10 mg once daily. If tolerated well and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily. This medication can be administered without regard to meals, and the tablet should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, and do not take double doses once a day.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by those with allergies to the active ingredient or any of the ingredients. It should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. This medication should not be used in patients with severely impaired kidney function, that is, a glomerular filtration rate of less than 30 mL/min/1.73m2, or in patients with end-stage kidney disease or those undergoing dialysis. Since this medication contains lactose, patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. Patients with mildly impaired kidney function should be monitored closely, and if kidney function drops below a certain level, this medication should be discontinued. In certain stages of heart failure, there may be limited experience with this medication, so it should be used cautiously, especially in severe heart failure patients. When used in conjunction with blood sugar-lowering agents like insulin or sulfonylureas, dose adjustments may be necessary due to the risk of hypoglycemia. During treatment with this medication, side effects such as hypoglycemia, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, dehydration, etc., may occur, so symptoms should be monitored carefully. Particularly, serious metabolic abnormalities such as ketoacidosis may occur, so if symptoms like vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing appear, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary. Elderly patients or those at risk of fluid loss should be cautious of dehydration and hypotension, and may temporarily stop taking this medication if needed. There have been reports of liver damage associated with this medication; therefore, patients with liver function abnormalities should use it with caution. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia, particularly when combined with other hypoglycemia-inducing drugs. It is recommended that pregnant or nursing women do not use this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, they should discontinue use. This medication is not used in pediatric or adolescent patients, as its safety and efficacy have not been established. While no specific toxic symptoms have been reported in case of overdose, appropriate treatment may be necessary depending on the patient's condition.
