  • Type 2 diabetes not adequately controlled
View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar in adult patients with type 2 diabetes who do not have sufficient blood sugar control through diet and exercise, particularly in overweight individuals. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin for effective treatment tailored to each patient's condition. This helps stabilize blood sugar levels and improves diabetes symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

The initial dose is to take one Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release tablet of 500 mg once daily with the evening meal. After one week, measure blood sugar levels to adjust the dosage. Increase the dosage by 500 mg weekly, with a maximum of 2000 mg daily taken with the evening meal. If blood sugar control is not achieved after taking the maximum daily dose of 2000 mg, consider taking 1000 mg twice daily with meals.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause serious lactic acidosis; if symptoms appear, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Caution is required when used in conjunction with other diabetes medications due to the risk of hypoglycemia. It should not be administered to patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, dehydration, or acute conditions such as severe infections. This medication should also not be used in cases of acute heart failure, myocardial infarction, or sepsis that can affect renal function. Before and after examinations using iodinated contrast agents, the administration of this medication should be discontinued for a certain period and resumed only after renal function has returned to normal. It should not be given to patients who have had allergic reactions to any components of this medication or to type 1 diabetes patients, or those with a history of lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis. In cases of severe infections, severe trauma, or around surgery, the use of this medication should be temporarily halted until the patient's condition stabilizes, at which point it can be resumed. Irregular meals or intense exercise, and interactions with other medications can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia, requiring caution. Regular monitoring of renal function is advisable during the use of this medication, and any abnormalities should be addressed immediately. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so it is advisable to periodically check serum vitamin B12 levels. Gastrointestinal disturbances can occur but generally improve naturally during early treatment. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis; therefore, it is important not to overindulge while taking this medication. During pregnancy, this medication may affect the fetus; therefore, if you plan to become pregnant or are pregnant, consult your doctor. If breastfeeding, consult your doctor on whether to continue breastfeeding or to stop medication as this drug may be excreted in breast milk. Elderly patients are prone to renal function decline, so dosage adjustments and frequent renal function testing are necessary. In case of overdose, hypoglycemia is rare but there is a risk of lactic acidosis, requiring immediate medical treatment. This medication should be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing the tablet, and the tablet coating may appear in the stool, which is normal. During the use of this medication, regular blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin, renal function, and hematological tests should be performed to monitor treatment effects and side effects.
