Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It can be administered alone, and when blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it may be used in combination with metformin or other diabetes medications. Additionally, it is used in conjunction for patients who do not achieve sufficient blood sugar control with insulin treatment or multiple combined therapies. It is important to refer to clinical trial information from experts regarding its efficacy in preventing cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular diseases. This medication is effectively used for improving blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dose of this medication for monotherapy and in combination with insulin and other antihyperglycemic agents is 10 mg once daily. If tolerance to this 10 mg dose is good and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose can be increased to 25 mg once daily. This medication may be taken regardless of meals. The tablets should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered.
This medication should not be administered to patients who are allergic to the active ingredient or any components. It should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or those with diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with severely impaired renal function, end-stage kidney disease, or those undergoing dialysis should not take this medication. Due to the presence of lactose, it should not be administered to patients with genetic conditions such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Patients with weak renal function require careful dosage adjustments, and treatment should be discontinued if renal function worsens significantly. Patients with mild to moderate heart failure should use caution, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. When used concurrently with insulin or insulin secretagogues, there may be a risk of hypoglycemia, necessitating dosage adjustments. The most common side effects of this medication include hypoglycemia, genital infections, increased urination, and urinary tract infections. Particularly, hypoglycemia may occur more frequently when used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas, thus monitoring is necessary. Serious metabolic disturbances such as ketoacidosis may occur rarely and require immediate treatment if symptoms arise. Elderly patients or those at risk of fluid loss should be closely monitored for dehydration or hypotension. There have been reports of serious urinary tract infections such as urosepsis or pyelonephritis, so prompt treatment is required if infection symptoms are present. This medication may increase the risk of genital fungal infections; thus, appropriate management is necessary if related symptoms are present. Its use is not recommended during pregnancy, and treatment should be halted if pregnancy is confirmed. Breastfeeding should also be avoided while taking this medication. Safety and efficacy in children under 18 years have not been established. No special toxic symptoms have been reported in cases of overdose, but appropriate treatment is required based on clinical conditions. This medication may have a slight effect on driving or operating machinery, especially in individuals at risk for hypoglycemia, necessitating caution. Regular monitoring of kidney function and checking fluid status and electrolyte balance is important during treatment with this medication. Furthermore, diabetic patients should pay attention to routine foot care and infection prevention, and if pain or abnormal symptoms occur around the perineum, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is advised.
