Lipid improvement by reducing cholesterol and increasing HDL in hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia.
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet for the reduction of elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, and for the increase of HDL cholesterol. It may also be administered as an adjunct treatment for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering therapies are insufficient. This drug should be used in conjunction with an appropriate diet and other non-pharmacological measures, and any underlying secondary causes should be treated first to achieve effectiveness. During treatment, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels should be monitored, and if necessary, accurate LDL cholesterol levels should be measured. This drug is widely used as a lipid-modifying agent to reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia.
This drug is administered once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day. An initial dose of either 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg is recommended. In cases where a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol is required, the initial dose is recommended as 10/40 mg per day. After starting treatment or appropriately adjusting the dose, blood tests should be conducted with intervals of more than 2 weeks.
This drug has been reported to cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can cause serious muscle damage. Patients with severe infections, surgeries, trauma, or kidney issues should temporarily discontinue or stop this medication. Patients with allergies to any active ingredients or components of this drug, active liver disease, persistently high liver enzyme levels, myopathy, pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication. Additionally, patients who are taking certain other medications should not use this drug. Those with a history of alcohol abuse, liver disease, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, elderly patients, and those at high risk for myopathy should use this drug with caution. This medication contains Tartrazine (Yellow No. 4), so those allergic to this component should also be cautious. If symptoms such as myalgia, muscle weakness, fatigue, or fever occur during treatment, patients should immediately inform their doctor and blood tests may be performed to check for muscle damage. Liver function abnormalities can also occur, so liver function tests should be performed before starting treatment, and if symptoms of liver damage appear during treatment, the tests should be repeated. This drug should not be taken by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and appropriate contraceptive methods should be used while taking this medication. Dizziness may occur, so caution is required when driving or operating machinery. There are many drug interactions, especially when taken with other medications that inhibit enzymes involved in drug metabolism in the liver; therefore, dose adjustments and careful monitoring are necessary. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, so treatment should be symptomatic and include monitoring liver function and muscle enzymes as needed. The safety and efficacy of this drug in children have not been established, and it is not recommended for use in this population. Elderly patients are at higher risk of myopathy, so caution is required, but specific dose adjustment is not necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
