Lipid control effect by reducing cholesterol and increasing HDL in patients with hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia.
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, including heterozygous familial and non-familial or mixed dyslipidemia, to improve elevated cholesterol levels and related lipid abnormalities. It is also administered to patients with rare homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, either with or as an alternative to other lipid-lowering therapies, and helps reduce total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels. This medication has not been studied in certain types of dyslipidemia, particularly Fredrickson types I, III, IV, and V, so caution is needed. When using this medication, it is recommended to combine it with a diet that limits saturated fats and cholesterol and to administer it when there is insufficient response to other non-drug therapies. Prior to starting the medication, secondary causes of dyslipidemia such as diabetes and hypothyroidism should be identified and treated appropriately. This medication is used as an effective treatment method to reduce the risks associated with hypercholesterolemia and related vascular diseases.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, it is administered in the range of 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day, with an initial dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg recommended. If greater LDL-cholesterol reduction is required, an initial dose of 10/40 mg per day is recommended. Follow-up lipid levels should be checked at intervals of at least 2 weeks after initiation of therapy.
This medication is associated with a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can cause severe damage to muscle tissue. Therefore, if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs, notify a doctor immediately. Temporary discontinuation or cessation of this medication is required in the presence of risk factors such as severe acute infection, hypotension, major surgery, trauma, severe metabolic disorders, or seizures. This medication is contraindicated in certain patients. For example, it should not be taken by patients with allergies to this medication or its components, active liver disease, persistent increases in liver enzymes of unknown cause, muscle disorders, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, patients taking certain antiviral agents, or those with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse or liver disease, severe liver dysfunction, renal impairment, hypothyroidism, family history of muscle disorders, previous muscle toxicity with statins or fibrates, and elderly individuals over 70 years of age, who are at higher risk for myopathy, should use this medication with caution. During the use of this medication, monitoring for signs of liver dysfunction, muscle pain, abdominal pain, dizziness, muscle weakness, and other abnormalities is necessary; consult a doctor if these symptoms occur. In particular, if liver enzyme levels are more than three times the normal level or muscle-related blood test values exceed five times the upper normal limit, the administration of this medication should be stopped. Regular liver function tests and muscle-related assessments should be conducted, and careful observation for signs of liver or muscle damage is necessary during treatment. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment. Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established; therefore, it is not recommended. Due to the high risk of myopathy in elderly patients, careful administration is required, although dose adjustment is not necessarily mandatory. Patients with compromised liver or kidney function should consult a physician before starting this medication, especially those with active liver disease should not take this medication. Possible interactions may occur when this medication is taken with other drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; treat according to symptoms and monitor liver function and muscle-related tests.
