View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Initially, the medication may be administered alone, and if blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it can be combined with metformin. Additionally, this medication can be used to improve blood sugar control when other diabetes medications such as sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin have been ineffective alone. It is a medication that is also used when blood sugar control is challenging with these combination therapies. Therefore, it is effective in improving blood sugar control alongside various medication therapies.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious allergic reactions during use; therefore, if symptoms such as severe rash or swelling, difficulty breathing, etc. occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. This medication may induce pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, so quickly inform healthcare professionals if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea occur. This medication should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, nor should it be used in people who are allergic to this medication or its components. For patients with reduced renal function, dosage adjustments are necessary, so regular kidney function tests should be conducted and taken according to the doctor's instructions. During the use of this medication, symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, especially when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas; therefore, blood sugar levels should be closely monitored, and medication dosages should be adjusted as needed. If severe joint pain or skin blistering symptoms occur during treatment, immediately inform a doctor and discontinue medication. It is advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and safety and efficacy in children or adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established. In cases of overdose, standard treatment should be taken, and blood dialysis may be utilized for partial removal as directed by healthcare professionals.
