Improvement of hypercholesterolemia (dyslipidemia) and prevention of risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases
This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary modifications in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It effectively lowers elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is safe and effective to use this drug in conjunction with lipid-lowering medications and appropriate dietary changes for patients at high risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia. It is particularly administered when there is insufficient response to diet and other non-pharmacological treatments. Prior to administration, secondary causes of dyslipidemia such as diabetes and hypothyroidism should be identified and treated as necessary. Regular lipid monitoring to control total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels is crucial, especially in patients with acute coronary events who should be tested for lipids upon hospitalization or within 24 hours for treatment decisions. This drug effectively improves hyperlipidemia.
This medication is administered once daily without regard to meals. The dosage range is 10/5mg to 10/20mg daily. A starting dose of 10/5mg daily is recommended. For patients requiring a greater reduction of LDL cholesterol, the dosage may be adjusted accordingly. After initiation or dosage adjustment, lipid levels should be checked at intervals of 4 weeks or more and dosage should be adjusted based on the results.
This medication may cause rare side effects affecting the muscles, such as rhabdomyolysis, a serious muscle injury, and acute renal failure, so if symptoms of muscle pain or weakness occur, consult a physician immediately. Caution is required when administering this drug to patients with certain diseases or those taking specific medications. For example, it is contraindicated or requires caution in patients with active liver disease, severe renal failure, muscle diseases, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and there may be an increased risk of side effects when combined with certain medications. This drug should be administered carefully to patients at high risk of myopathy, such as alcoholics, patients with a history of liver disease, elderly patients, or those with hypothyroidism, and regular monitoring is necessary. Drug interactions may occur, so be sure to inform the healthcare provider of any other medications being taken, especially caution is needed when combined with anticoagulants, fibrate medications, certain antibiotics, or cyclosporine.
