Lipid control for hypercholesterolemia (primary, mixed) and prevention of atherosclerotic vascular disease risk
This medication helps lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly familial and non-familial types, or mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It is used primarily as an adjunct to dietary therapy and is administered when dietary modification alone, aimed at limiting saturated fat and cholesterol intake, is insufficient. Additionally, when using lipid-lowering drugs in patients at high risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia, other risk factors should be considered. Prior to treatment, secondary causes of dyslipidemia such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, liver disease, and renal failure should be identified and treated if necessary. Lipid levels, including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, should be monitored regularly; especially when triglycerides are high, ultracentrifugation methods should be used for accurate measurement. This medication is utilized to improve dyslipidemia and reduce the risk of atherosclerotic disease.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, an initial dose of 10/5 mg once daily is recommended. In patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol, the dose may be adjusted, and up to 10/20 mg may be increased daily. After starting treatment or adjusting the dose, blood lipid levels should be checked at intervals of more than 4 weeks to adjust the dose.
This medication can cause muscle disorders such as myopathy or, rarely, serious muscle injury called rhabdomyolysis, so if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness occur, medical consultation should be sought immediately. In cases with risk factors for muscle injury, such as severe infections, hypotension, major surgery or trauma, metabolic disorders, or uncontrolled seizures, the use of this medication may need to be temporarily or permanently discontinued. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or those with active liver disease, muscle disorders, or severe renal impairment should not take this drug. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should also avoid using this medication. Patients with a high risk of muscle injury, such as alcoholics, patients with poor liver function, elderly individuals, and hypothyroid patients, should use this medication with caution. Furthermore, co-administration of certain specific medications can increase the risk of muscle injury, so any ongoing medications should be reported to a doctor or pharmacist. This medication can burden the liver, and periodic liver function tests should be conducted before and during treatment. If blood tests show elevated levels of the muscle damage marker CPK, the use of this medication may need to be suspended. During treatment with this medication, symptoms such as dizziness, headache, indigestion, muscle pain, edema may occur; if symptoms are severe, consultation with healthcare professionals is advised. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should be cautious. Dizziness may occur during driving or operating machinery; therefore caution is needed. Extra care is required when administering to children or the elderly, and safety in pediatric patients has not been sufficiently established. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment based on symptoms along with liver and muscle function tests is necessary. This medication must be kept out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
