Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to assist in the blood sugar control of patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone while accompanying dietary and exercise therapy, and it can also be applied to patients with no prior experience in diabetes drug therapy. If blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it may be co-administered with Metformin. Additionally, this medication is used together with other treatments such as sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin when adequate blood sugar control is not achieved. This medication is also added to enhance blood sugar control when the effect is insufficient with multiple drug regimens. It is used to improve overall blood sugar management.
This medication is administered once a day at a dose of 100 mg for monotherapy or combination therapy, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. It can be taken regardless of meals. In patients with renal impairment, dose adjustments may be necessary based on kidney function. Mild renal impairment (eGFR ≥ 60 and < 90 mL/min/1.73 m2): No dose adjustment required. Moderate renal impairment (eGFR ≥ 45 and < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2): No dose adjustment required.
This medication may cause severe allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur after taking the medication, it should be discontinued immediately and a doctor consulted. There is a risk of serious inflammation of the pancreas called pancreatitis occurring during the use of this medication, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite arise, one should immediately inform healthcare professionals. This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, and it must not be administered to those allergic to this medication or its ingredients. Patients with impaired kidney function need to adjust the dosage of this medication, and it is necessary to regularly monitor kidney function and take the medication according to a doctor's instructions. There may be side effects such as upper respiratory infections, headaches, dyspepsia, diarrhea, and hypoglycemia during the use of this medication, thus careful blood sugar management is necessary. Particularly when taken with insulin or sulfonylurea medications, the risk of hypoglycemia increases, so dosage adjustments may be required when necessary. If severe joint pain or symptoms such as blisters on the skin occur, one should inform a doctor immediately, and if these symptoms are suspected, medication discontinuation is advised. It is better for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding not to use this medication, and it is not administered to children or adolescents under 18 years old because its safety and efficacy have not been verified. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function; thus, it is necessary to carefully monitor kidney function before and after taking this medication. In case of overdose, drug removal from the gastrointestinal tract and necessary monitoring like an electrocardiogram should be conducted, as some removal through hemodialysis is possible, so treatment should be followed according to healthcare professionals' instructions. This medication has relatively few drug interactions; however, caution is needed when taken with cyclosporine or digoxin, and consultation with a doctor is required before use.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
