This medication is used to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also used as an adjunctive agent for partial seizures in epilepsy, helping to alleviate symptoms. Additionally, it is effective in treating fibromyalgia, contributing to pain relief in patients. It is utilized to improve symptoms associated with various nerve-related diseases.
This medication is taken orally, divided into two doses daily, regardless of food. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral neuropathic pain: Starting dose is 150 mg daily, can be increased to 300 mg daily after 3-7 days, and then may be increased at intervals of 7 days to a maximum of 600 mg daily. - Central neuropathic pain: Starting dose is 150 mg daily, increased to 300 mg daily after one week.
There is insufficient safety and efficacy data for children under 12 years of age and adolescents aged 12 to 17, so administration is not recommended.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so if mood changes or symptoms of depression occur during treatment, consult a doctor immediately. Do not use if allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have specific genetic disorders such as lactose intolerance. Diabetic patients may need to adjust their doses of blood sugar control medications due to potential weight gain from this medication. If symptoms such as swelling of the face or around the mouth or difficulty breathing (angioedema) occur, stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical attention. Elderly patients should take caution as this medication may cause dizziness or drowsiness, increasing the risk of falls or injury; special caution is needed when initiating treatment. This medication may cause blurred vision or changes in eyesight, so consult a doctor if any unusual symptoms develop. When discontinuing this medication, do not stop suddenly; instead, taper off gradually under medical supervision, as withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, and anxiety may occur after discontinuation. Patients with a history of substance abuse may be at greater risk of misuse of this medication, so they should inform their doctor beforehand and be closely monitored. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dosage adjustments, and caution is also necessary for patients with heart disease when taking this medication. Caution should be taken when co-administering this medication with opioid analgesics, as it may increase central nervous system depressant effects leading to risks such as respiratory distress. In early pregnancy, the use of this medication may affect the fetus, so pregnant women should consult with their doctor before taking it, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during treatment. Women who are breastfeeding should be aware that this medication can be transferred to breast milk and may affect the baby; therefore, consult with a doctor about whether to stop breastfeeding while on this medication. This medication can cause dizziness and drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery after taking it. In the case of overdose, severe symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, and depression may occur, and immediate medical treatment should be sought.
