Severe lower respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, severe infections, or infections suspected to be caused by less susceptible organisms: Administer 500mg twice daily. Urinary tract infections: Administer 250mg twice daily. Uncomplicated gonorrhea: Administer 1g as a single dose. Lyme disease: Administer 500mg twice daily for 14 days (10~21 days). In patients with significant renal impairment, it is recommended that the cefuroxime dose be reduced as follows to compensate for delayed excretion. Creatinine clearance ≥ 30 mL/min/1.73m2; T1/2 (hours) 1.4 - 2.4: No dosage adjustment required (standard dose: 125mg-500mg twice daily) Creatinine clearance 10 - 29 mL/min/1.73m2; T1/2 (hours) 4.6: Administer the standard single dose every 24 hours Creatinine clearance < 10 mL/min/1.73m2; T1/2 (hours) 16.8: Administer the standard single dose every 48 hours Patients receiving hemodialysis; T1/2 (hours) 2 - 4: Administer an additional standard single dose at the end of each dialysis session

Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against various bacteria. This medication is primarily used for treating upper respiratory infections such as acute otitis media, sinusitis, and tonsillitis, and it is also effective for lower respiratory infections such as acute bronchitis and pneumonia. Additionally, it is used in the treatment of urogenital infections including pyelonephritis, cystitis, and urethritis. It helps treat skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, impetigo, and furunculosis, and is also used for gonorrhea and early Lyme disease. Notably, it is stable against beta-lactamases and effective against strains resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin, making it useful for treating various infections. Thus, cefuroxime is effectively used for treating a wide range of infections.

Precautions

This medication is a cephalosporin antibiotic and should not be administered to patients allergic to this class of drugs. Care should be taken when administering to patients with a history or family history of allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics, or those with allergic dispositions. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, those who cannot take medications orally, elderly patients, or those in poor general condition should be carefully monitored as vitamin K deficiency may occur. When using this medication, rare hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, urticaria, or anaphylaxis may occur, and if any unusual symptoms manifest, administration should be discontinued immediately. Gastrointestinal and neurological adverse reactions such as headaches, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain may occur; if symptoms are severe, consult healthcare professionals. If severe diarrhea or abdominal pain occurs during or after antibiotic use, consider the possibility of pseudomembranous colitis and visit a medical facility immediately. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully evaluate the necessity of administering this medication as it may pose risks, and caution is advised during breastfeeding. Safety has not been established for infants under 3 months of age, and for children, it is recommended to use dry syrup formulations instead of splitting the tablets. Elderly patients may experience adverse reactions more frequently due to diminished physiological function; thus, dose adjustment and monitoring are necessary. This medication may cause dizziness when driving or operating machinery, so caution is warranted. There may be interactions with other medications, especially diuretics, aminoglycoside antibiotics, probenecid, and antacids, which should be reported to healthcare professionals.
