Treatment of bacterial infections such as respiratory infections (excluding acute bronchitis) and urinary tract infections
This medication is used to treat various infections caused by different bacteria. For example, it is effective against respiratory infections excluding acute bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, infections of the ear, nose, and throat, bacterial prostatitis and urinary tract infections, gonococcal cervicitis and urethritis, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, gynecological infections, peritonitis, cyst infections, and sebaceous cysts, and more. However, it should only be used restrictively for certain diseases like acute bacterial sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, and exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease when there are no other treatment alternatives available. This medication works against various bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Shigella, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus to treat infections. It is used safely and effectively for the treatment of various bacterial infections.
Typically, for adults, ciprofloxacin is administered orally as a single dose of 250 to 500 mg, twice a day between meals. In cases of severe complex infections, the dose may be increased to 750 mg, twice a day. For acute infections, treatment usually lasts from 5 to 10 days, and it should be continued for at least 3 additional days after symptoms have resolved. In patients with renal impairment, dosage should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance.
This medication can cause serious side effects such as tendinitis or tendon rupture; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately if such symptoms occur. In particular, patients with myasthenia gravis should not use this medication as it may worsen their symptoms. This medication is only used for infections like acute bacterial sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media when there are no alternative treatments available. Caution should be exercised in the elderly, patients with renal impairment, solid organ transplant recipients, or when used with corticosteroids as the risk of tendon rupture may increase; it should not be combined with corticosteroids. This medication can trigger seizures, so it should be used cautiously in patients with epilepsy or those with a history of seizures. Pregnant women or those of childbearing potential, nursing mothers, children and adolescents under 18, patients with epilepsy, or those who have had allergic reactions to this medication or similar drugs should not use it. This medication can interact with various drugs, so those taking other medications should consult a doctor or pharmacist. During treatment, avoid strong sunlight or ultraviolet exposure, and if symptoms such as skin rash or itching occur, discontinue use immediately. Blood sugar changes may occur, so diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar levels closely. This medication may affect kidney function; therefore, dosage adjustments may be needed in patients with renal impairment, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. Care should be taken when driving or operating machinery, and it should be avoided when consumed with alcohol. If diarrhea occurs during treatment, it may signify a serious side effect such as pseudomembranous colitis; therefore, consultation with healthcare professionals should be sought immediately. In case of overdose, renal function should be closely monitored, and appropriate emergency care should be provided. When storing, keep out of reach of children and avoid direct sunlight and ultraviolet exposure.
