Treatment of various bacterial infections (septicemia, respiratory infections, etc.) and improvement of infections.
This medication is effective against various bacteria. It acts on common bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Enterococcus, as well as several Gram-negative and Gram-positive strains like Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Therefore, it is very useful for the treatment of various infections such as septicemia, osteomyelitis, arthritis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and cholecystitis. It is also used for wound infections related to surgery and orthopedics, obstetric infections, otitis media, sinusitis, bacterial meningitis, and infections in patients with neutropenia. It can also treat complex infections like peritonitis or cystic fibrosis. This drug is effectively used for the treatment of a wide range of infections.
For Meropenem hydrate, 0.5 to 1 g (unit) should be administered 2 to 3 times per day, by intravenous infusion over more than 30 minutes. For suspected infections in patients with pathogenic pneumonia, peritonitis, and neutropenia, 1 g (unit) should be administered every 8 hours by intravenous infusion. For cystic fibrosis and meningitis, 2 g (unit) should be administered every 8 hours by intravenous infusion.
For bacterial meningitis in children over 3 months, administer a dose of 40 mg per kg body weight every 8 hours by intravenous infusion over more than 30 minutes, depending on the pathogen's sensitivity and the patient's condition.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it is not used in patients who have had a reaction to this drug, patients taking sodium valproate, patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions to this drug or its components, and patients who have had severe allergic reactions to other carbapenem or beta-lactam antibiotics. Additionally, caution should be exercised when administering this drug to patients with allergies, renal impairment, epilepsy, or central nervous system disorders, severe liver disease, elderly patients, those who have difficulty with oral intake, and infants under 3 months of age. In particular, patients with impaired renal function may experience elevated drug concentrations and central nervous system symptoms, thus requiring dosage adjustments. Serious allergic reactions, such as shock or anaphylaxis, may rarely occur during the use of this drug, so patients should be closely monitored before and after administration. If symptoms of hypersensitivity such as rash, urticaria, itching, or fever appear, administration should be immediately stopped. Various blood abnormalities such as pancytopenia, anemia, and thrombocytopenia may occur, thus regular blood tests are necessary. Serious liver and kidney issues such as hepatic dysfunction or acute renal failure may develop, requiring periodic liver and kidney function tests. Gastrointestinal side effects such as severe diarrhea or pseudomembranous colitis may occur; therefore, administration should be stopped immediately if abdominal pain or diarrhea symptoms develop. Central nervous system symptoms may include seizures or altered consciousness, necessitating careful observation. Various side effects have been reported, including respiratory issues, severe skin reactions, candidiasis, vitamin deficiency symptoms, cardiovascular issues, and neurological issues, thus prompt action is needed in case of symptom occurrence. This medication should only be administered for the minimal necessary duration following sensitivity testing to prevent the emergence of resistant organisms. Regular testing, including liver function tests, should be conducted during administration, and if rash or adverse reactions occur, switch to another drug immediately. Additionally, drug interactions may occur with this medication, so it is essential to consult with healthcare providers regarding other medications being taken. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant should only use this drug when the benefits outweigh the risks, and breastfeeding should be avoided during administration. Elderly individuals may be at higher risk of side effects due to decreased body function; thus, careful adjustments of dosage and administration intervals should be made, alongside close monitoring. Finally, this drug should be administered by intravenous injection only and should be used promptly after reconstitution. If preservation is needed, it should still be used within a certain time frame, and color changes in the solution will not affect efficacy.
