This medication is used in the treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar control is insufficient with diet and exercise alone, especially in overweight diabetic patients. It is a medication that supports improved blood glucose management.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 500mg of Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release tablet once daily with the evening meal. The maximum daily dose is 2000mg, and dosages may be increased gradually by 500mg per week. Doses may be administered up to a maximum of 2000mg once a day, and if blood sugar control is not achieved, consider administering 1000mg twice a day with meals. For patients with renal impairment, the starting dose is 500mg or 750mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening, so caution is needed. When used with other diabetes medications, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. This medication should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or those with acute conditions such as dehydration, severe infections, or myocardial infarction. In patients with acute heart failure or before and after examinations using radiological contrast agents, administration of this medication should be suspended, and renal function must be checked before re-administration. Patients who have had an allergic reaction to this medication, patients with type 1 diabetes, and patients with metabolic acidosis should not be administered this medication. In cases of severe infection, trauma, or before and after surgery, administration should be temporarily suspended and resumed when the patient's condition stabilizes. Caution is necessary in patients with poor nutritional status, weak liver function, or those who consume excessive alcohol. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, taste disturbances, and vitamin B12 deficiency, particularly gastrointestinal symptoms are common during initial treatment but improve over time. Renal function should be monitored regularly, and if renal function declines, this medication should be stopped. If blood sugar control becomes difficult or if symptoms of hypoglycemia appear, consultation with a physician is required. The hypoglycemic effect may vary depending on other medications taken concurrently, so patients should inform healthcare professionals of any medications they are taking. During pregnancy, it may affect the fetus, so if there are plans to become pregnant or if already pregnant, consultation with a physician is essential. During breastfeeding, this medication may be excreted in breast milk, so the breastfeeding status and medication treatment should be managed accordingly. It is preferable not to use this medication in children as safety has not been established. In elderly patients, dose adjustment may be necessary according to renal function decline, and regular monitoring of renal function is vital. In the case of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis is greater than the risk of hypoglycemia, so appropriate treatment should be sought immediately. This medication helps control blood sugar levels without weight gain, and it should be swallowed whole; it is normal for the tablet shell to be excreted, so do not worry about it. Keep out of reach of children and do not transfer to other containers for safety.
