This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension and to improve symptoms in heart failure patients (NYHA class II to IV) who are intolerant to ACE inhibitors. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of mortality in patients with left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction. Due to its effectiveness for various cardiovascular diseases, it is actively used to manage the patient's condition.

How to take

Adult dose

Essential Hypertension: For valsartan, a recommended dose is 80 mg orally once daily. If blood pressure is not well controlled, it may be increased to 160 mg daily or combined with a diuretic, with a maximum dose of 320 mg daily. For elderly patients (aged 75 years and older), start with 40 mg once daily. For renal impairment patients with a creatinine clearance of 10-20 mL/min, start with 40 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause severe harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, thus it must be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, potentially pregnant, or nursing should not use this medication. Patients with severely impaired liver function, certain liver diseases, and severe renal impairment should not take this medication. Patients with a history of angioedema or those who experienced angioedema symptoms with ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor antagonists should also avoid this medication. Elderly patients, those with elevated serum potassium levels, and patients with mild to moderate liver impairment should adjust the dosage and use caution. Blood pressure may drop sharply, so particular caution is needed when starting the treatment or increasing the dosage, and if symptoms of hypotension occur, medical consultation should be sought immediately. This medication may interact with other blood pressure medications or diuretics, including potassium-sparing diuretics, so it is essential to inform your healthcare provider of any other medications being taken. Symptoms such as dizziness or drowsiness may occur, hence caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Possible adverse reactions during use include headache, dizziness, fatigue, cough, and dyspepsia; if serious symptoms arise, immediate notification to a healthcare provider is required. Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 18 years have not been established, hence it is advisable not to use this medication. In case of overdose, hypotension, decreased consciousness, and other symptoms may occur; therefore, emergency treatment should be sought immediately, and self-treatment should be avoided. Store this medication out of reach of children, taking care not to transfer it to other containers.
