Summary

Main use
Treatment of herpes zoster; treatment of genital herpes and suppression of recurrence
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer 250 mg of famciclovir orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of an initial episode of genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medication orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 125 mg of this medication orally twice daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this medication orally twice daily. Periodically discontinue treatment every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Since creatinine clearance of this medication is reduced in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be undertaken with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and an initial episode of genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose twice daily 10~29 250 mg per dose once daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 125 mg per dose twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose once daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose twice daily 10~29 125 mg per dose twice daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following equations. Men: {weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis For patients undergoing hemodialysis, administration every 48 hours is preferable, taking the dialysis interval into account. Since 4 hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this medication by about 75%, administer this medication immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is required in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, no specific recommended dose has been established.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with specific allergic reactions or genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Caution is required when using this medication in patients with poor kidney function, and dosage adjustment may be necessary. During treatment, symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness may occur, and some patients may experience side effects like decreased blood cell counts, skin rashes, and itching. This medication does not cure genital herpes, so it is important to avoid sexual contact during symptoms and to maintain safe sexual practices. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs while taking this medication, you should avoid driving or operating machinery. Patients with compromised liver function may not require special dosage adjustments, but caution is needed in patients with severe liver impairment as the drug's efficacy may be reduced. This medication has a low potential for interactions with other medications, but changes in drug concentrations or toxicity risks may occur when combined with certain medications, so consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication with caution, only when the benefits outweigh the risks. It is not recommended for children under 18 as safety and efficacy have not been established. Usually, elderly patients do not need dose adjustments, but those with decreased kidney function may need adjustments. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment, as blood dialysis may reduce the drug concentration. Store this product in a dry, cool place below 30 degrees Celsius, and keep out of reach of children. Transferring to another container can alter the quality, so it is best to store it in the original packaging.
