Treatment for improvement of hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia who have difficulties controlling their condition through diet and exercise alone. It is also used as an adjunct therapy in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who are are under dietary therapy or another lipid-lowering treatment. This medication effectively lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It is also used as an adjunct to dietary therapy in children aged 10 to 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who have elevated LDL-cholesterol levels or cardiovascular disease risk factors. It plays a supporting role in dietary therapy for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Particularly, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization in adults with elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels. Thus, this medication is effectively used to improve patients' blood lipid levels and reduce cardiovascular disease risk.
Regardless of meals, the initial dose is 5 mg once daily at any time of the day. If a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol is required, adjust the maintenance dose to 10 mg once daily. The maintenance dose should be adjusted appropriately according to LDL-cholesterol levels, therapeutic goals, and the patient's response at intervals of 4 weeks or more and can be increased up to 20 mg once daily.
Pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17) should receive 5 mg to 20 mg once daily. There is no clinical data for high-dose administration above 20 mg. Dosage
