Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, but if blood sugar control is inadequate, it may be co-administered with oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Particularly, if the effect is insufficient when using sulfonylureas or metformin alone, this medication may be used in combination with metformin to improve blood sugar control. Therefore, it helps manage blood sugar more effectively in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Administer 1 time daily orally. This medication should be taken before breakfast or just before the first meal. Patients receiving this medication for the first time should start with 1 mg of glimepiride. If necessary, the dosage may be increased by 1 mg at 1-2 week intervals. Generally, there is little additional effect above 4 mg, although some patients may increase to 6 mg or 8 mg. The maximum daily dosage is 8 mg.
This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a comatose state. Additionally, patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its components should not receive it. For patients with severe liver or kidney dysfunction, it is recommended to switch to insulin therapy instead of using this medication. It is safest for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and those who are breastfeeding not to take this medication. Insulin therapy may also be necessary for patients with severe infections, before and after surgery, or for those who have sustained significant injuries. Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea or vomiting may lead to insufficient nutrient absorption and an increased risk of hypoglycemia. Since this medication contains lactose, it should not be administered to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. During the first week of starting this medication, there is a high risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. This risk is greater especially for those who are malnourished, eat irregularly or skip meals, or engage in excessive exercise. Patients who frequently consume alcohol or have reduced kidney or liver function, and the elderly, should also be cautious of hypoglycemia. Additionally, those with endocrine diseases such as thyroid disorders or adrenal insufficiency may find it difficult to control hypoglycemia. When taking other medications, it is essential to inform the healthcare provider or pharmacist as they may also affect blood sugar control. This medication has a blood sugar-lowering effect which can lead to hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, and decreased consciousness. In severe cases, seizures or comatose states can occur, and if symptoms appear, immediate intake of glucose or assistance from healthcare professionals is required. Initial initiation or dosage changes of this medication may temporarily cause side effects such as blurred vision or gastrointestinal disturbances. Serious side effects, such as liver dysfunction or a decrease in blood cell counts, can rarely occur; should you experience unusual symptoms, consult your healthcare provider immediately. Allergic reactions may manifest as skin rashes or respiratory difficulties; if symptoms such as hives arise, discontinue use immediately and seek medical attention. This medication is most effective for controlling blood sugar levels when combined with consistent dosing, dietary adjustments, exercise, and weight management. Quickly consuming glucose is important when hypoglycemia occurs, and patients should always carry sugary substances with them. Care should be taken when driving or operating machinery while using this medication. It may be difficult to control blood sugar during stressful situations, surgeries, or infections, so it is necessary to consult with healthcare professionals to adjust treatment methods accordingly. When taken with other medications, the effects of this medication may increase or decrease, so it is crucial to inform the physician about any medications currently being taken. Interactions can especially occur with beta-blockers, antibiotics, steroids, and anticoagulants. It is safest not to take this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and insulin therapy should be initiated if necessary. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur; hence, immediate emergency measures such as inducing vomiting, stomach wash, or glucose injection are necessary. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established for children, and dosage adjustments may be required for the elderly due to reduced kidney function.
