Adjunctive treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients aged 16 years and older
This medicine is used as an adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial seizures and secondary generalized seizures in patients with epilepsy aged 16 and older. It helps reduce the frequency and severity of seizures, thereby alleviating the symptoms for the patient. It is administered additionally when the existing treatment is insufficient to control seizures. Through therapeutic effects, it contributes to the improvement of the patient's quality of life. Therefore, it is used for the treatment of seizures in patients with epilepsy.
This medicine should be taken twice daily. The recommended initial dose is 50mg twice daily; after 1 week, increase the dose to 100mg twice daily. Depending on clinical response and tolerability, the maintenance dose may be increased each week by 50mg per dose, twice daily. The maximum recommended dose is 400mg daily (200mg twice daily). If treatment with this medicine is to be discontinued, gradual dose reduction is recommended. (e.g., gradually reduce the daily dose by 200mg each week) This medicine may be taken with or without food. Patients with renal impairment No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with mild or moderate renal impairment (CLCR>30mL/min). A maximum dose of 300mg daily is recommended in patients with severe renal impairment (CLCR≤30mL/min) and those with end-stage renal disease. Since this medicine is removed from plasma by hemodialysis, patients on hemodialysis are recommended to receive an additional dose of up to 50% of a single dose immediately after hemodialysis. Caution is required when treating patients with end-stage renal disease because clinical experience is limited and metabolites (whose pharmacological activity is unknown) may accumulate. Dose adjustment should be performed cautiously in all patients with renal impairment. Patients with hepatic impairment Dose titration should be performed cautiously in patients with hepatic impairment. A maximum dose of 300mg daily is recommended in patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment. Use is not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Elderly patients Dose reduction is not necessary in elderly patients. Experience with lacosamide use in elderly patients with epilepsy is limited; however, decreased renal clearance and increased AUC are associated with age and should be taken into consideration in elderly patients. (See the section “Patients with renal impairment.”)
Children and adolescents under 16 years of age: Use in this age group is not recommended because data on the safety and efficacy of this medicine in children and adolescents under 16 years of age are unavailable.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior; therefore, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately if mood changes or unusual behavior appear during treatment. It should not be taken if there is an allergy to any of its ingredients. Dizziness may occur during the initial doses, so caution is needed to avoid falls or injuries. Patients with heart disease or cardiac conduction disorders should undergo an electrocardiogram before taking this medication and take it cautiously according to the doctor's guidance. This drug can affect mental health, including depression, mood changes, and suicidal thoughts; any symptoms should be reported to healthcare providers immediately. Rarely, severe allergic reactions such as skin rash, fever, and hepatitis may occur, and if these symptoms develop, the medication should be discontinued, and a hospital visit is necessary. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, and diplopia, which may alleviate over time. This medication may affect driving and the operation of hazardous machinery; caution is required after taking it. There may be interactions with other medications, so it is vital to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any current medications being taken. Older adults may take this medication without special dose adjustments but should exercise caution depending on their health status. The safety and efficacy have not been established for children under 16 years old, so use in that age group is not recommended. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant must consult a doctor regarding the use of this drug, and breastfeeding women should consider discontinuing breastfeeding as the drug can transfer through breast milk to the baby. In case of overdose, serious central nervous system symptoms and cardiovascular abnormalities may occur, so a medical institution should be visited immediately. No specific antidote exists, and treatment will be symptomatic. Due to the potential for abuse, it is essential to take this medication exactly as prescribed by a doctor and not to discontinue it suddenly.
