Summary

Main use
Treatment and prevention of influenza A and B infections
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
Influenza A and influenza B virus infections: Begin treatment on the first or second day after the onset of influenza symptoms. This medicine may be administered regardless of food intake; tolerability may improve in some patients when taken with food. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: Administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally twice daily for 5 days. Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older who have difficulty swallowing capsules should use the powder for suspension of this medicine. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg twice daily for 5 days is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily for 5 days is recommended. Patients receiving periodic hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after each dialysis session to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations; treatment should not exceed 5 days. If influenza symptoms occur during the 48 hours between dialysis sessions, administration may also be given before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, a single 30mg dose of this medicine after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance below 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for treatment in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9). Prevention of influenza A and influenza B virus infections Adults and adolescents aged 13 years and older: For close contacts of an infected person, administer 75 mg of oseltamivir orally once daily for 10 days. Start administration within 2 days of contact with the infected person. The recommended dose for prevention during an influenza epidemic is 75 mg once daily. The safety and efficacy of this medicine have been demonstrated for up to 6 weeks. The preventive effect continues while taking this medicine. Patients with renal impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance of 60 mL/min or greater. For patients with creatinine clearance of 30 ~ 60 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg once daily is recommended. For patients with creatinine clearance of 10 ~ 30 mL/min, a reduced dose of 30 mg every other day is recommended. Patients receiving periodic hemodialysis should receive a 30mg dose of this medicine after every 2 dialysis sessions to maintain therapeutic plasma concentrations. The initial dose may also be administered before the start of dialysis. For peritoneal dialysis, administration of 30mg of this medicine once weekly after dialysis is recommended. The pharmacokinetics of oseltamivir have not been studied in patients with end-stage renal disease who are not receiving dialysis (e.g., creatinine clearance below 10mL/min); therefore, no recommended dose is available for these patients. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary for prevention in adult patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh score ≤ 9).

This medication is used to treat influenza A and B virus infections in children and adults older than 2 weeks of age. It is important to start treatment within 48 hours of infection onset to effectively improve symptoms. It can also be used for prevention of influenza in patients aged 1 year and older, but only as an adjunct when vaccination is ineffective or not possible. It is not a substitute for vaccination, so using it alongside the vaccine is recommended. This drug helps alleviate influenza infection symptoms and aids in preventing infection.

Precautions

This drug cannot replace the influenza vaccine and should be used separately. It is effective only against influenza A and B virus infections; safety and efficacy against other infections have not been confirmed. During treatment with this drug, especially in children and adolescents, neuropsychiatric adverse reactions may occur, such as symptoms like seizures or delirium, so if abnormal behavior occurs, immediately consult medical staff. For children over 10 years old, use of this drug is not recommended except in special cases, and caregivers should ensure the patient is not alone for 2 days during treatment. Patients allergic to this drug or its components should not take it. Patients with impaired kidney function or those undergoing dialysis require dosage adjustment, and it is not recommended for patients with end-stage renal disease. High-risk patients with asthma, chronic bronchitis, or immunosuppressive states should use this drug with caution. Common side effects during taking this drug include nausea, vomiting, headache, etc., most of which are temporary. Rarely, symptoms such as shock, anaphylaxis, liver dysfunction, skin rash, acute renal failure, and neuropsychiatric symptoms may occur, so if any abnormal symptoms appear, notify medical personnel immediately. In children, vomiting is the most common side effect, and safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 1 year of age. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should only use this medication if the benefits outweigh the risks, as its effects on the fetus or infant are not clear. Elderly patients generally do not require dosage adjustment; however, they should be closely monitored due to potential decline in bodily functions and pre-existing conditions. Severe adverse reactions are rarely reported in cases of overdose, but if any abnormal symptoms occur, visit a medical institution immediately. This drug generally has low interaction with other medications, but caution may be needed with some medications, so inform medical staff of all medications being taken. It does not significantly affect driving or operating machinery, but the potential decline in capability due to influenza itself should be considered. This drug should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers for safety.
