Treatment of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, alleviation of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and maintenance therapy effect
This medication is effective in treating gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers and is used to alleviate symptoms of erosive and ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease and for long-term maintenance therapy. It is also used in combination with antibiotics to treat gastrointestinal ulcer patients infected with Helicobacter pylori and aids in conditions associated with excessive gastric acid secretion such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medication regulates gastric acid secretion to protect the gastric mucosa and improve symptoms.
For gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers: Typically, 10 mg is taken orally once daily. Depending on symptoms, 20 mg can be taken orally once daily. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: 10 mg or 20 mg is taken once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. If unresolved after 8 weeks, 10 mg or 20 mg can be taken orally twice daily for another 8 weeks. Note that the 20 mg twice daily dose is only for patients with confirmed severe mucosal damage.
This medication should not be used in patients with allergies or hypersensitivity reactions to specific components or to the benzimidazole class. It is also not safe for patients allergic to penicillin or macrolide antibiotics, those taking certain heart-related medications, patients receiving atazanavir or rilpivirine, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Patients with impaired liver function, elderly patients, those with a history of drug allergies, and patients allergic to the yellow No. 4 (tartrazine) dye contained in this medication should use it with caution. This medication may cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, and hives, so usage should be immediately discontinued in the presence of such symptoms. Changes in blood cell counts or liver function abnormalities, as well as cardiovascular symptoms, may occur, requiring regular blood tests and liver function tests. Gastrointestinal symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, and in rare cases, serious conditions such as hepatitis or pancreatitis may occur. Neurological symptoms such as headache, insomnia, and dizziness have been reported, and in rare cases, confusion or seizures can occur, requiring caution. Respiratory symptoms such as coughing and dyspnea may occur, and in rare cases, serious lung diseases may develop, so any unusual symptoms should be promptly discussed with a healthcare professional. Muscle pain, joint pain, skin rashes, hair loss, and severe skin reactions may occur, necessitating immediate discontinuation of use and consultation with a doctor if such symptoms arise. Ocular symptoms such as blurred vision and eye pain have been reported, so notify a healthcare professional if there are changes in vision. Renal function abnormalities or symptoms such as difficulty urinating and hematuria may occur, requiring monitoring of kidney health. Long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, so patients on long-term treatment need bone density management. Hypomagnesemia may occur, so patients using it for a long time or in combination with certain medications should regularly check their blood magnesium levels. This medication strongly suppresses gastric acid secretion, slightly increasing the risk of bacterial infections in the stomach, and persistent chronic diarrhea may raise suspicion of Clostridium difficile infection. Caution is advised as drowsiness may occur while driving or operating machinery. There may be interactions with other medications, so consult a physician, especially when used in combination with warfarin, methotrexate, antibiotics, or antifungals. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication, and elderly patients should use it cautiously due to increased risk of side effects from impaired liver function. Safety in children has not been established, so it is best not to use it in this population. This medication should not be chewed or crushed and must be swallowed whole, and it should be stored in a safe place out of reach of children. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, so treatment should be symptomatic and done according to medical advice.
