How it is given

Adult administration

Adults and children over 12 years of age should receive 1 to 2 g (potency) of ceftriaxone once daily via intravenous or intramuscular injection. For infections caused by pathogens with severe disease or moderate susceptibility, the dose may be increased up to 4 g (potency) once daily. For gonorrhea treatment, a single intramuscular injection of 250 mg (potency) is recommended. To prevent infections before and after surgery, 1 to 2 g (potency) should be administered once 30 to 90 minutes prior to the surgery.

Child administration

For newborns (within 14 days of birth), administer 20 to 50 mg (potency) per kg of body weight once daily, not exceeding 50 mg (potency) per kg of body weight. For infants and children (15 days to 12 years old), the dosage is by body weight.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in conjunction with calcium-containing solutions, as mixing or simultaneously administering the two drugs can result in harmful precipitates. Especially in newborns, administering this drug with calcium can lead to serious problems in the lungs and kidneys, so it should never be used. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug or have had hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillin antibiotics should not be administered this medication. Additionally, it should not be used in premature infants, jaundiced infants, or newborns with problems related to bilirubin conjugation. It should be used cautiously in patients with a history of allergies or those who have exhibited allergic symptoms such as asthma or rashes. For patients with impaired kidney function, the dosage or administration interval should be adjusted as drug concentrations may increase. It is important to regularly monitor liver, kidney, and blood status during the use of this drug. This medication may cause side effects such as diarrhea, rashes, increased liver enzymes, and decreased blood cells; any unusual symptoms should be reported immediately. If severe allergic reactions or shock symptoms occur, administration should be stopped immediately, and emergency treatment should be obtained. Because this drug can induce dizziness during driving or machinery operation, caution is necessary. It may affect kidney function when used in combination with other medications, so medical consultation is advised. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be decided cautiously, as it may affect the newborn. In newborns and premature infants, an increase in bilirubin levels can lead to a risk of encephalopathy, so it should not be administered. The elderly are at higher risk for side effects due to decreased bodily function, so dosage adjustments and monitoring are necessary. Regular blood tests and kidney and liver function tests should be conducted during treatment with this drug. If diarrhea or abdominal pain worsens after drug administration, medical personnel should be notified immediately, as there is also a risk of severe colitis due to infection. Caution should be exercised to ensure this drug is not given concurrently with calcium-containing solutions, and the injection points should be separated or thoroughly washed during administration.
