Precautions

This medication must not be mixed or administered simultaneously with calcium-containing solutions or other medications. Especially in newborns, mixing this medication with calcium can cause serious problems due to the formation of precipitates in the body; thus, it should never be used. Patients with allergies to this medication or those who have had hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins or penicillin antibiotics must not take this drug. Additionally, premature infants and newborns with jaundice or problems with bilirubin binding must not use this medication. Caution is required for individuals with a history of drug allergies or allergic constitutions, patients with severely compromised kidney function, elderly individuals, and patients in poor overall health; dose adjustments or interval modifications may be necessary. Side effects such as diarrhea, rash, urticaria, liver function abnormalities, and blood dyscrasias may occur, and if any abnormal symptoms are present, the physician should be consulted immediately. Rarely, serious allergic reactions or severe side effects such as encephalopathy and worsening kidney function may occur; thus, patient status should be closely monitored during administration. This medication may interact with other drugs, so care must be taken when used with diuretics, aminoglycoside antibiotics, calcium-containing solutions, vitamin K antagonists, etc. Patients must inform healthcare providers of any medications they are currently taking before administration. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication only when the benefits outweigh the risks, as its safety has not been fully established. This medication is not safe for newborns or premature infants due to the risk of bilirubin encephalopathy, and caution should be taken for elderly patients as they have a higher likelihood of adverse effects due to diminished physiological function. During administration, pain at the injection site, phlebitis, nausea, and vomiting may occur; thus, the injection method and speed should be adjusted, and regular tests of liver and kidney function and blood tests should be conducted to monitor for abnormalities. If diarrhea or abdominal pain worsens during use, administration should be discontinued immediately and healthcare providers consulted, as there is a risk of Clostridium difficile-associated colitis following antibiotic treatment. Finally, this medication may cause dizziness when driving or operating machinery, so caution is necessary.
