Relief of spasticity due to spinal cord disorders, cerebral disorders, multiple sclerosis, and spinocerebellar degeneration
This medication helps relieve skeletal muscle spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis and spinocerebellar degeneration. It is also effective for symptoms of spasticity due to various spinal cord diseases, including inflammatory, degenerative, traumatic, neoplastic, and idiopathic conditions. It is used in conditions such as spastic paraparesis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, transverse myelitis, and traumatic paraplegia. Additionally, this medication aids in symptom relief for spasticity due to cerebral causes, particularly in cases of cerebral palsy, sequelae of cerebrovascular accidents, or degenerative or neoplastic brain diseases. Overall, it is used to improve muscle spasticity symptoms associated with central nervous system disorders.
Treatment with this medicine should always be started at a low dose, with gradual dose increases. The optimal dose should be individualized for each patient to reduce clonic seizures, flexor and extensor rigidity, and spasms while avoiding adverse effects as much as possible. Use with caution to prevent excessive muscle weakness and falls when muscle tone is needed to maintain balance while standing and moving, or for functional activities. It is important to allow transient spasms that help maintain some degree of muscle tone and support circulatory function. Administer this medicine with a small amount of water during meals. The total daily dose should be divided into 3 oral doses in adults. Adults: Administer baclofen 5㎎ orally 3 times daily. Until the optimal dose is determined, increase the dose by 5㎎ per dose, 3 times daily, at 3-day intervals. Adults: Patients who are hypersensitive to this medicine should start at a lower dose (5-10㎎ daily) and increase it slowly. Adults: The usual optimal dose is 30-80㎎ daily. Hospitalized patients may receive 100-120㎎ daily under close supervision.
Children (12 months~18 years): Treatment is generally started at a very low dose (0.3 mg/kg daily, divided into 2~4 doses). Children (12 months~18 years): The usual maintenance daily dose is 0.75~2mg/kg. Children under 8 years: The maximum daily dose is 40mg. Children 8 years and older: The maximum daily dose is 60mg. Children (12 months~18 years): Increase the dose carefully at intervals of about 1-2 weeks until it is suitable for the individual patient's requirements. If no clear therapeutic effect is seen within 6-8 weeks after administration of the maximum dose, reconsider whether to continue this medicine. The total daily dose should be divided into 4 oral doses in children.
This medication should not be used by patients with hypersensitivity to its ingredients. It also contains lactose, so patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, and glucose-galactose malabsorption should avoid taking it. Patients with neurological disorders such as psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Parkinson's disease should use this medication cautiously and monitor carefully to prevent symptom exacerbation. Patients with a history of epilepsy may experience seizures from this medication, so they should maintain their anticonvulsant treatment and closely monitor their condition. Patients with peptic ulcers, heart failure, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases should also use this medication with caution. Patients with liver or kidney dysfunction should take a lower dose or use it cautiously, especially those undergoing dialysis should only take a very small amount. Due to muscle relaxant action, respiratory depression may occur, so patients with respiratory diseases need to be careful. This medication may pose a risk of seizures in children, especially those with a history of epilepsy. In the initial stages of administration, side effects such as drowsiness or sedation may occur, and elderly patients or those with mental illnesses and cerebrovascular disorders may experience more severe side effects. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to severe symptoms such as anxiety, hallucinations, and seizures, so it should be tapered off gradually. Drowsiness or dizziness may occur while taking this medication, so patients should avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. Liver function or blood glucose levels may change, so patients with liver impairment or diabetes should undergo regular examinations. This medication may increase the risk of suicide, requiring careful monitoring of patients with depression or suicidal tendencies. Also, due to the risk of drug abuse, patients with a history of substance abuse should be monitored closely. During pregnancy, it should only be used when necessary, considering potential risks to the fetus, and should be administered cautiously in breastfeeding mothers. Elderly patients should start with lower doses and monitor their conditions due to declining body functions. In case of overdose, symptoms such as central nervous system depression, respiratory distress, or seizures may occur, requiring emergency care. When taken with other central nervous system depressants, alcohol, tricyclic antidepressants, antihypertensives, etc., side effects may worsen, so caution is advised.
