Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, esophagitis and reflux heartburn; treatment and improvement of gastritis-related gastric mucosal lesions
This medication is used to treat active gastric and duodenal ulcers and to prevent the recurrence of duodenal ulcers. It is also effective in treating symptoms of erosive and ulcerative esophagitis and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) causing heartburn. It helps improve gastric mucosal lesions such as erosion, bleeding, redness, and swelling that occur during acute exacerbation of acute and chronic gastritis. In summary, this drug is used to alleviate symptoms of various gastrointestinal diseases and protect the mucosa to maintain a healthy stomach condition.
1. Treatment of active gastric or duodenal ulcers Adults: Take 300mg of nizatidine once daily at bedtime, or take 150mg orally twice daily, in the morning and evening. Most ulcers heal within 4 weeks, but treatment may be continued for up to 8 weeks if necessary. In cases of active gastric ulcer, malignancy must be ruled out before treatment. 2. Prevention of duodenal ulcer recurrence Adults: After healing of a duodenal ulcer, take 150mg orally once daily at bedtime. Treatment may be continued for up to 1 year; results of longer-term treatment are not known. 3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease Adults: Take 150mg orally twice daily, in the morning and evening. Treatment may be continued for up to 12 weeks. 4. Improvement of gastric mucosal lesions Adults: Take 150mg orally twice daily, in the morning and evening, for 2 weeks. 5. Dosage adjustment for patients with severe renal impairment The dose for patients with renal impairment should be reduced and adjusted as follows. Creatinine clearance 20~50 ml/min: Active duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), benign gastric ulcer: 150mg once daily Creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min: Active duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), benign gastric ulcer: 150mg every other day Maintenance therapy Creatinine clearance 20~50 ml/min: 150mg every other day Creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min: 150mg every 3 days Some elderly patients may have a creatinine clearance below 50mL/min. Based on pharmacokinetic data in patients with renal impairment, the dosage should also be reduced in these patients according to the degree of renal impairment. The clinical impact of this dosage reduction in patients with renal impairment has not been evaluated.
This medication should not be used in patients who have had an allergic reaction to this drug or similar types of drugs. Patients with a history of drug allergies or impaired liver or kidney function should use this medication with caution. In particular, patients with reduced kidney function may require dosage reduction or increased dosing intervals due to potential increases in drug concentration. Blood abnormalities such as anemia or leukopenia have been reported, so patients should consult a doctor if they experience unusual symptoms. Gastrointestinal side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, or nausea may occur, and patients should notify their doctor if symptoms are severe. Liver function abnormalities may occur, necessitating liver function tests and symptom monitoring. Rarely, neurological symptoms such as confusion, headache, drowsiness, and dizziness may occur, warranting caution. Patients may experience symptoms of tachycardia, and should notify their doctor if they feel any abnormalities. Women may experience breast enlargement, and men have reported sexual dysfunction. Skin reactions such as skin rash or excessive sweating may occur, requiring attention. This medication is mainly excreted through the kidneys, thus elderly patients or those with renal impairment should have their renal function tested before administration, and their condition should be closely monitored during use. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should only use this medication if absolutely necessary, as its safety is not well established, and it may affect the fetus or infant, requiring careful consideration. Safety for children has not been established, thus it is not recommended for pediatric use. In case of overdose, appropriate treatment such as inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, or using an adsorbent drug should be sought, and this medication cannot be effectively removed via blood dialysis. This drug generally has few interactions with other medications; however, caution is advised when used with high-dose aspirin, as blood levels may increase. Symptoms of stomach cancer may be masked while using this drug, so it is critical to confirm the absence of malignancies before use. During treatment, regular blood tests and liver and kidney function tests should be performed to ensure no issues arise, and alternative treatments should be considered if no improvement is observed.
