Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication helps manage blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who find it difficult to control blood sugar with diet and exercise alone, particularly those who are overweight. Adult patients may use it alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. It can also be safely used in children over 10 years of age and growing adolescents, either as monotherapy or in combination with insulin. This medication effectively regulates blood sugar levels, aiding in diabetes management.
The dosing should be based on individual drug response and tolerability and should not exceed the recommended maximum dosage per day. Start with a low dose and administer 500mg with meals 2 to 3 times a day. The dose can be gradually increased by 500mg weekly, and if administering up to 2000mg, take it divided into two doses, morning and evening. If the dosage exceeds 2000mg, it can be divided into three doses with meals.
In children over 10 years and growing adolescents, the typical starting dose is 500mg once a day during or after meals. Blood sugar levels should be measured one week later to adjust the dose. One day
This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so caution is needed. It should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or in patients with acute conditions such as dehydration, severe infections, or acute myocardial infarction. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with acute or unstable heart failure, before and after certain radiological tests, patients who are hypersensitive to this medication or other biguanides, and patients with type 1 diabetes. Use in patients with severe infections, severe trauma, during surgical procedures, malnutrition, liver dysfunction, severe pulmonary dysfunction, or excessive alcohol consumption should also be avoided or temporarily halted. Be cautious when there are irregular meals, strenuous exercise, or co-administration of interacting medications, as these can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia. Lactic acidosis is rare but can be very serious, and if symptoms such as muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, or abdominal pain occur, immediate consultation with medical personnel is required. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may commonly occur, and slowly increasing the dose or taking the medication with meals may alleviate symptoms. This medication is excreted through the kidneys, so periodic kidney function tests are necessary, especially in elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it should be avoided during treatment. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, so it is advisable to regularly check blood levels of vitamin B12. During pregnancy, as it can cross the placenta, it should not be administered if there is a risk of placental insufficiency or pre-eclampsia, and it is essential to consult a doctor if planning to become pregnant or during pregnancy. This medication is excreted in breast milk, so careful consideration should be given to breastfeeding and whether to discontinue the medication. As there may be interactions with other medications, it is crucial to inform healthcare providers of any concurrent medications, and blood glucose levels should be frequently monitored. In cases of overdose, blood dialysis may be necessary, so seek medical attention immediately. This medication has the advantage of helping to control blood sugar without weight gain, but regular blood glucose and kidney function tests are important. Special care is required when administering to children or the elderly, and it should be kept out of reach of children.
