Improvement of blood sugar control and treatment of type 2 diabetes
This medication is used for patients with type 2 diabetes who do not achieve adequate blood sugar control through diet and exercise alone, particularly in those who are overweight. It can be used alone or in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. This aids in effective blood sugar control and contributes to diabetes management. The treatment regimen is adjusted according to the patient's health status, and it is used to stabilize blood sugar levels.
Administer 500mg of Metformin Hydrochloride Extended-Release tablets once daily with the evening meal. Adjust the dose based on blood sugar levels after one week, increasing by 500mg weekly up to a maximum daily dose of 2000mg with the evening meal. If blood sugar control is not achieved, consider administering 1000mg twice daily (with meals). For patients with renal impairment, the initial dosage is 500mg or 750mg once daily.
This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and may rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, so caution is required. If taken with other diabetes medications, there is a possibility of hypoglycemia, thus careful monitoring of blood sugar levels is needed. Patients with moderate to severe impaired renal function, dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, or acute conditions affecting kidney function such as acute myocardial infarction should not take this medication. When undergoing tests involving radiocontrast iodine agents, this medication should be discontinued prior to the examination and can be resumed only after normal kidney function is confirmed. Patients with allergies to this medication, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or other specific metabolic disorders should not use it. Severe infections or trauma, pre-and post-surgery, malnutrition, liver dysfunction, excessive alcohol consumption, etc., may necessitate temporary discontinuation of this medication. Patients with irregular eating patterns, excessive exercise, or concurrent use of interacting medications should use this medication cautiously as there is a risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia. During treatment, side effects such as vitamin B12 deficiency, impaired taste, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, etc.), and skin rashes may occur. If any unusual symptoms arise, consultation with a physician is advised. This medication is excreted by the kidneys, so regular monitoring of kidney function is necessary, and treatment should be discontinued if function worsens. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided during treatment. During pregnancy, careful consideration of the potential effects on the fetus is necessary, and it is not recommended while breastfeeding. Elderly patients may have decreased renal function; hence, dosage should be adjusted accordingly and kidney function should be monitored regularly. In case of overdose, blood dialysis may be used to remove the drug, so medical attention should be sought immediately. Maintaining regular meals and exercise along with regular blood sugar and kidney function checks is very important during treatment. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. Additionally, several medications may interact with this drug, so be sure to inform healthcare providers about any other medications being taken.
