How it is given

Adult administration

As Sodium Ceftriaxone, administer 1-2 g (potency) intravenously or intramuscularly once daily. In cases of infections caused by pathogens showing moderate to severe sensitivity, doses can be increased up to 4 g (potency) once daily. For meningitis, the initial dose can be administered up to a maximum of 4 g (potency) once daily. For the treatment of gonorrhea, a single intramuscular injection of 250 mg (potency) is recommended. For the prevention of infections prior to and after surgery, 1-2 g (potency) should be administered.

Child administration

Newborns (within 14 days of birth): Administer 20-50 mg (potency) per kg of body weight once daily, with a maximum of 50 mg (potency) not to be exceeded. Infants and children (from 15 days to 12 years): Administer per kg of body weight.

Precautions

This drug should not be mixed with solutions containing calcium or administered simultaneously with other medications. In particular, it should absolutely not be used in newborns under 28 days of age when administered with calcium-containing solutions due to potential risks. Cases have been reported of serious problems occurring due to the formation of precipitates in the lungs or kidneys of newborns or premature infants who received this drug. Patients with a history of allergies to this drug or hypersensitivity to cephalosporins and penicillin antibiotics should not use this drug. Additionally, if there is an allergy to the local anesthetic lidocaine used for intramuscular injection, this drug should not be used, and it should not be administered intravenously with lidocaine. It is safer to avoid administering this drug to patients with a potential for issues with bilirubin binding, such as premature infants, newborns with jaundice or hypoalbuminemia, and acidosis. Caution is advised when administering this drug to patients with a history of allergies or those with allergic conditions such as bronchial asthma, as well as to patients with severe renal impairment. In particular, in patients with impaired kidney function, the dosage should be reduced or the interval between doses should be increased. Long-term use or high-dose use of this drug can result in various side effects such as changes in blood cell counts, diarrhea, rashes, liver enzyme abnormalities, among others, necessitating regular examinations. Rarely, severe allergic reactions, severe skin reactions, or encephalopathy may occur; if symptoms arise, notify medical personnel immediately. During the administration of this drug, it is important to regularly check liver and kidney function, as well as blood tests, to monitor for abnormalities. Emergency preparedness for acute allergic reactions should be in place, and patients should be observed closely. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and symptomatic treatment should be provided; symptoms like dizziness should be handled by avoiding driving or operating machinery. This drug should be administered carefully to pregnant or breastfeeding women as it can cross the placenta and be partially transmitted through breast milk. It is safer not to use this drug in newborns, especially premature infants, due to the risk of bilirubin encephalopathy. Elderly patients may experience side effects more readily due to decreased body function, so dosage and intervals should be adjusted carefully. This drug can interact with other medications, so it is essential to consult with healthcare professionals regarding concomitant medications, particularly since it must never be co-administered with calcium-containing solutions. Care should be taken in preparing the injection and administering it, ensuring it is not used simultaneously with calcium-containing solutions. This drug should be used as quickly as possible after preparation, and precautions should be taken to maintain stability during storage.
