This drug is used to treat various infections caused by different bacteria. It is mainly effective for complicated skin and soft tissue infections, acute and chronic otitis media, sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is also used for urinary tract infections such as acute pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis, and urethritis, as well as gastrointestinal infections like bacterial dysentery and enteritis. In women, it is used to treat infections such as salpingitis, intrauterine infections, and Bartholinitis, and it is also applicable for ophthalmic infections like blepharitis, stye, nasolacrimal duct inflammation, and corneal ulcers. However, as this drug is a fluoroquinolone, it has a possibility of severe adverse reactions and should be used cautiously when no alternative treatment methods are available. It helps effectively treat these various bacterial infections.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

The usual adult dose is 300~600 mg of ofloxacin, taken in 2~3 divided doses daily. For Hansen's disease, take 400~600 mg of this medicine in 2~3 divided doses daily. Precautions

This drug may cause inflammation or rupture of tendons in specific areas, and can lead to peripheral neuropathy or central nervous system effects. If such serious adverse reactions occur, use of this drug should be stopped immediately, and patients with myasthenia gravis should not use it as their symptoms may worsen. Furthermore, this drug is recommended only for use when there are no other treatment options for specific bacterial infections. Medications in the same class as this one carry a higher risk of tendon rupture, especially in the elderly, patients with impaired kidney function, transplant recipients, and when used in conjunction with steroid medications. Therefore, use with steroids should be avoided, and if tendon pain or inflammation occurs, use should be stopped immediately and rest should be taken. Caution is needed as this drug may worsen symptoms in patients with severe myasthenia gravis by interfering with nerve and muscle connections. Individuals with hypersensitivity to this drug or a history of tendon problems caused by it, growth-phase adolescents under 18, pregnant or nursing women, patients with certain enzyme deficiencies, and those with seizure disorders should not use this medication. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, the elderly, those with a history of mental illness, and patients with poor liver function, or aortic or valvular heart disease should use this drug with caution. Rarely, severe allergic reactions, skin reactions, abnormalities in liver or kidney function, gastrointestinal issues, blood abnormalities, or neurological symptoms may occur, so if unusual symptoms arise, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is advised. This drug may cause sensitivity to sunlight; thus, strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure should be avoided, and adequate hydration should be maintained during use. Additionally, this drug may increase the risk of seizures, so those with epilepsy or central nervous system disorders should be cautious. Because there are many drug interactions, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals about any concurrent medications, especially with anticoagulants, diabetes medications, antacids, etc. It is safer to avoid using this drug during pregnancy or while nursing, and it should not be used in children or adolescents who are still growing. The elderly should adjust the dose and administration intervals as the drug may remain in the body longer due to reduced kidney function, leading to increased side effects. Regular liver, kidney function, and blood tests should be conducted while using this drug, and careful monitoring for adverse reactions is necessary. In case of overdose, immediate notification of healthcare professionals for appropriate measures is essential, as this drug may not be completely removed by hemodialysis. When used as an injection, it should be administered slowly via intravenous injection, and it is safer not to mix it with other drugs.
