This medication is used for the treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also used as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in patients with epilepsy, effective regardless of the presence of secondary general symptoms. Additionally, it helps in the treatment of fibromyalgia. It is employed to improve various neurological symptoms and conditions.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken orally in divided doses twice daily, regardless of food. The starting dose for neuropathic pain (peripheral and central), epilepsy, and fibromyalgia treatment is 150 mg per day; depending on individual response and tolerability, it can be increased to 300 mg per day after 3 to 7 days or one week. If needed, it can be increased to a maximum of 600 mg per day. Recommended dosage for fibromyalgia.

Child dose

Precautions

This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors, so patients should consult a doctor immediately if they experience any changes in mood or behavior during treatment. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication should not take it, and diabetic patients may need to adjust their diabetes management medications due to weight gain. If symptoms of angioedema occur, use should be discontinued immediately, and elderly patients should be cautious of dizziness or drowsiness to avoid falls or injuries. Transient visual disturbances or changes in vision may occur, and symptoms may improve upon discontinuation of the drug. When switching to this medication from existing antiepileptic drugs, it should be done cautiously as there is insufficient data regarding discontinuation of those medications. Due to the risk of drug abuse, patients with a history of mental illness or substance abuse should be closely monitored. Dose adjustments may be necessary for patients with impaired renal function, and caution should be exercised if administered to patients with heart failure. Concurrent use with opioid analgesics may exacerbate central nervous system depression, so caution is needed. Pregnant women are advised against using this medication during the early stages of pregnancy due to potential fetal impact, and women of childbearing potential should employ effective contraception. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur while taking this medication, so patients should refrain from engaging in dangerous activities like driving or operating machinery. Rarely, serious life-threatening skin reactions may occur; if any skin abnormalities appear, use should be immediately discontinued, and a physician should be notified. In case of overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, and depression may arise, necessitating urgent medical treatment.
