This medication is effective against various bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Shigella, and Salmonella, and is used for respiratory infections excluding acute bronchitis, as well as community-acquired pneumonia. It is also effective for ear, nose, and throat infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis), bacterial prostatitis, acute simple cystitis, and acute pyelonephritis. It is also used for gonococcal cervicitis and urethritis, gastrointestinal infections, infections of the bile duct, skin and soft tissue infections, and osteoarticular infections. It can also be used to treat gynecological infections, peritonitis, fistulitis, chalazion, and inflammatory conditions. However, as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, there is a possibility of severe adverse reactions, so it should only be used when there are no other treatment options available for acute bacterial sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and acute otitis media. This medication is used to treat various bacterial infections.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual dose of ciprofloxacin is 250 to 500 mg per dose, administered orally twice a day between meals. For severe complicated infections, the dose may be increased to 750 mg twice a day. In the case of acute infections, treatment is typically for 5 to 10 days, with at least 3 additional days of treatment after symptoms have resolved. For patients with renal impairment: 1) Creatinine clearance > 50 mL/min: administer the usual dose.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious adverse reactions such as tendinitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects, so administration must be stopped immediately if such symptoms appear. In particular, patients with severe myasthenia gravis may experience worsening symptoms due to this medication and should not use it. This drug is used to treat specific bacterial infections and should be used cautiously and only when no alternative treatment options are available. Elderly patients, renal impairment patients, and patients taking corticosteroids are at increased risk of tendon rupture and should avoid combination therapy. Pregnant women, breastfeeding women, adolescents under 18, and patients with epilepsy should not use this medication. Additionally, the risk of adverse effects increases when taken with certain medications such as tizanidine or ketoprofen, so these should not be combined. Care should be taken when using this drug in patients with severe renal impairment, seizure history, elderly patients, or patients with central nervous system disorders. This medication can cause various adverse reactions, and caution is needed as side effects such as skin rash, gastrointestinal disorders, neurological disorders, liver function abnormalities, musculoskeletal pain, and kidney problems have been reported. Particularly, if diarrhea or abdominal pain occurs, there may be a risk of serious intestinal conditions such as pseudomembranous colitis, and consultation with a physician is necessary. This medication may cause hypersensitivity reactions to sunlight, so strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure should be avoided, and administration should be stopped if any unusual symptoms occur. Additionally, if sensory abnormalities appear, patients should consult a specialist. This medication could affect driving or machine operation capabilities, so caution is advised, especially when taken with alcohol. Patients with heart-related issues or those at risk of QT interval prolongation should exercise additional caution when using this medication. Diabetic patients requiring blood sugar control should monitor for fluctuations in blood sugar and check their levels regularly. This medication often has many drug interactions, so it is crucial to consult a physician or pharmacist when taken with theophylline, warfarin, diabetes medications, and immunosuppressants. Pregnant or nursing women should either avoid this medication or stop breastfeeding, and it is not to be used in growing children or adolescents. Elderly patients may have increased drug concentrations due to declining kidney function, thus dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted. In case of overdose, renal function should be monitored carefully, and appropriate treatment should be given if necessary. Medications should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air exposure and kept at room temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage can prolong the drug's efficacy.
