Treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections, secondary infections in chronic respiratory diseases, etc.
This medicine is effective against various types of bacterial infections, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli. It is mainly used for complicated skin and soft tissue infections, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and various urinary tract infections. It also helps in treating gastrointestinal infections such as bacterial dysentery and enteritis, as well as infections of the uterus and appendages, and inflammations of the eyes, ears, sinuses, and periodontal tissues. It is also effective for abdominal infections such as cholecystitis or cholangitis. However, as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, caution is required, and it should only be used when there are no other treatment options for certain infections. Overall, it is used for the treatment of various bacterial infectious diseases.
Typically, for adults, levofloxacin is administered at a dose of 100 mg orally 2-3 times a day. For severe cases or insufficient effects, the dose is increased to 200 mg, taken 3 times a day. Dosing may be adjusted based on age and symptoms.
This medicine is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. However, when taking this medication, there is a risk of tendon issues such as tendinitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system adverse effects. In particular, patients with myasthenia gravis should avoid this medication as symptoms can worsen. Additionally, this medicine should only be used when there are no other treatment options for its limited indications such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media. There is an increased risk of tendon rupture in the shoulder, hand, and Achilles tendon during the use of this medicine, particularly in elderly patients, patients with impaired kidney function, and those taking corticosteroids. Therefore, any pain or inflammation should prompt an immediate cessation of the medication and rest. Patients with myasthenia gravis should be especially careful due to the neuromuscular blocking effects of this medicine, which can worsen their symptoms. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this medicine or similar classes of drugs, or with history of tendinitis or tendon rupture related to these medications should not use it. It is also not safe for children in the growth period under 18, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women, and patients with epilepsy. Patients with significantly impaired kidney function, central nervous system disorders or seizure history, elderly patients, and diabetic patients should use this medicine cautiously. Blood glucose levels should be monitored closely, especially when used in conjunction with blood glucose-lowering medications, as changes can occur. This medication can rarely cause shock, severe allergic reactions, neuropsychiatric adverse effects, abnormal heart rhythm, kidney and liver dysfunction, blood anomalies, gastrointestinal disturbances, musculoskeletal issues, and severe skin reactions. If any unusual symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended. Additionally, during the use of this medicine, exposure to strong sunlight or artificial UV light should be avoided, and care should be taken when driving or operating machinery due to potential dizziness or drowsiness. This medicine can interact with other medications, so particularly when taking antacids, iron, calcium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anticoagulants, theophylline, or diabetes medications, consultation with a physician or pharmacist is essential. It is advisable not to take this medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it is not administered to children. Elderly patients may experience increased drug concentration due to kidney function decline and a risk of hepatotoxicity, necessitating dose adjustment and monitoring.
