Treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections and secondary infections in chronic respiratory diseases
This medication is effective in treating infections caused by various bacteria, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Escherichia coli. Approved indications include complicated skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory infections such as chronic bronchitis or pneumonia, urinary tract infections including acute pyelonephritis and cystitis, bacterial dysentery and gastroenteritis, as well as intrauterine infections and adnexitis in women. It is also used for the treatment of various infections such as blepharitis and styes, otitis media, sinusitis, periodontal disease, cholecystitis, and cholangitis. Due to the risks of significant side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics, it should only be used when no other treatment options are available for specific infections such as acute sinusitis or exacerbation of chronic bronchitis. It effectively improves the health of patients suffering from a variety of bacterial infections.
The usual adult dosage is 100 mg of levofloxacin administered orally 2 to 3 times a day. For patients with severe infections or inadequate response, 200 mg should be administered 3 times a day. Dosage may be adjusted according to age and symptoms.
This medication can cause tendon-related disorders such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, so if such symptoms appear, administration must be stopped immediately. Peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system symptoms have also been reported; if neurological abnormalities occur, the drug should be discontinued. Patients with myasthenia gravis may experience worsening symptoms from the use of this medication and should not take it. While this drug is used to treat specific bacterial infections, it should only be used with caution when no other treatment options are available. Elderly patients, those with renal impairment, and patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy are at increased risk of tendon rupture and should be monitored closely. Combining with corticosteroids increases the risk of tendon rupture, so co-administration should be avoided. Serious allergic reactions, such as hypersensitivity and anaphylaxis, may occur, requiring immediate discontinuation of the medication upon symptoms. Psychiatric and neurological side effects like insomnia, dizziness, headache, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and others may occur, so caution is necessary. Reports of cardiac abnormalities such as arrhythmias or QT interval prolongation have been noted, and patients with heart disease should use this drug with caution. Changes in renal function, liver dysfunction, and blood abnormalities may occur, necessitating regular testing. Gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur, and if symptoms of pseudomembranous colitis appear, administration should be stopped immediately. Musculoskeletal side effects can include myalgia, tendonitis, tendon rupture, and rhabdomyolysis, requiring vigilance upon symptom onset. Severe cutaneous reactions such as rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis may manifest, necessitating immediate consultation with healthcare professionals. Pulmonary adverse reactions such as interstitial pneumonia or allergic pneumonia may occur, requiring cessation of treatment upon symptoms like dyspnea. Diabetic patients should carefully monitor their blood sugar levels as fluctuations may increase. This drug is not indicated for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women or in growing children and adolescents. Care should be taken while driving or operating machinery due to possible dizziness or drowsiness, which can increase the risk of accidents. Potential interactions with other medications mean patients should inform their healthcare provider of any other drugs they are taking. In cases of overdose, central nervous system symptoms and cardiac abnormalities may appear, requiring immediate emergency assistance. This drug is excreted via the kidneys, so patients with decreased kidney function should be cautious regarding dosage adjustment and interval. Patients with a history of aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection, valvular insufficiency or regurgitation should use this medication with caution and consult with healthcare professionals immediately if unusual symptoms occur.
