How it is given

Adult administration

As Ceftriaxone, administer 1–2 g (based on potency) by intravenous or intramuscular injection once daily. For infections caused by severe pathogens or pathogens with moderate susceptibility, the dosage can be increased to 4 g (based on potency) once daily. <Intramuscular Injection> Dissolve 0.25 g and 0.5 g in 1% hydrochloric lidocaine solution of 1 mL and 2 mL, respectively, and 1 g in 1% hydrochloric lidocaine solution of 3.5 mL, injecting deeply into the gluteus. It is advisable not to administer more than 1 g into one side of the buttock.

Child administration

For newborns (within 14 days of birth), administer 20–50 mg (based on potency) per kg of body weight once daily, not exceeding 50 mg (based on potency) per kg of body weight. It is not necessary to differentiate between premature and full-term infants.

Precautions

This medication should not be mixed or administered simultaneously with calcium-containing solutions or other medications. In particular, it must not be given to newborns less than 28 days old due to the risk of precipitation when combined with calcium, which can cause serious issues. If administered to newborns or premature infants together with calcium, it may result in precipitation in the lungs or kidneys, leading to fatal outcomes. Patients with a known allergy to this medication or who have had hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins should not receive it. Caution is also required for those allergic to certain local anesthetics, such as lidocaine, when administered via intramuscular injection; this medication containing lidocaine should not be administered intravenously. It should not be used in premature infants, especially those with a combined gestational and chronological age of less than 41 weeks. Due to the risk of bilirubin encephalopathy, it should not be administered to newborns with jaundice, hypoalbuminemia, or acidosis. This medication can cause various side effects including eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, diarrhea, rash, increased liver enzymes, and more, requiring immediate reporting of any abnormal symptoms. A thorough medical history and monitoring are necessary prior to administration as severe allergic reactions or shock may occur, and emergency measures must be prepared. Long-term or high-dose usage requires regular checks of liver and kidney function and blood tests. Elderly patients and those with impaired renal function may require dose adjustment and careful monitoring due to the potential for increased drug concentration. This medication may cause dizziness while driving or operating machinery, and caution is advised. If there is an increase in diarrhea or blood in stools after antibiotic use, there is a possibility of Clostridium difficile infection, and immediate medical attention should be sought. The safety of this medication during pregnancy or lactation has not been fully established, therefore it should only be used cautiously when necessary. For newborns, particularly premature infants, this medication poses a risk of bilirubin encephalopathy and should not be used. When used with other medications, interactions may occur, so it is essential to inform healthcare providers about all medications being taken and follow their instructions. Prepared solutions should be used as soon as possible, and proper storage conditions should be followed.
