This medication is used as an adjunct when dietary changes and exercise are insufficient in the control of primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is also used as an adjunct to diet or other lipid-lowering therapies in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, and it lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It can also be used as an adjunct to dietary therapy in pediatric patients aged 10 to less than 17 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia who meet specific criteria. Furthermore, it is effective as an adjunct to dietary therapy for patients with primary dysbetalipoproteinemia. Finally, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and arterial revascularization in high-risk groups with chronic cardiovascular disease risk factors. Thus, it is used effectively for various lipid abnormalities and the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.
