Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive effect for partial seizures in epilepsy, improvement of fibromyalgia
This medication is used to relieve peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also utilized as an adjunctive treatment for partial seizures in patients with epilepsy to help control seizure symptoms. Additionally, it is effective in alleviating pain and discomfort in patients with fibromyalgia. It is widely used for the treatment of various neurological disorders.
This medication is taken orally, divided into two doses per day without regard to food. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral neuropathic pain: Starting dose of 150 mg per day, which can be increased to 300 mg within 3 to 7 days, and if necessary, can be further increased to a maximum of 600 mg with a 7-day interval. - Central neuropathic pain: Starting dose of 150 mg per day, which can be increased to 300 mg after 1 week.
There is insufficient safety and efficacy data for pediatric patients under 12 years of age and adolescents aged 12-17, so administration is not recommended.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, so it is important to closely monitor for signs of depression, mood changes, or abnormal behavior during treatment. Do not take this medication if you have an allergy to it or specific genetic issues such as lactose intolerance. Patients with diabetes should be careful as weight gain may necessitate adjustments in their blood sugar control medications. If allergic reactions such as angioedema occur, discontinue the medication immediately and consult a healthcare provider. Elderly patients are at risk of falls or injury due to dizziness or drowsiness, so caution is particularly advised during the initial stages of treatment. This medication may cause blurred vision or changes in eyesight, so inform a healthcare provider if any unusual symptoms occur. Withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, or anxiety may occur when discontinuing the medication, so it should be gradually tapered in consultation with a healthcare provider. Due to the risk of drug abuse, it is important to inform healthcare providers about mental health status and history of substance use, and to closely monitor for signs of misuse. Dosing adjustments may be necessary for patients with decreased kidney function. Patients with heart disease should be cautious as this medication may lead to cardiovascular issues such as congestive heart failure. When taken with other medications that have central nervous system depressant effects, there may be an increased risk of drowsiness or respiratory depression, so caution is warranted. It is advisable to avoid this medication during early pregnancy due to the risk of fetal malformation, and women of child-bearing potential should use effective contraception. Discuss with a healthcare provider whether to continue breastfeeding, as this medication may be transferred into breast milk and could affect the baby. It is safest to avoid hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery until the drowsiness or dizziness from this medication has subsided. In the case of an overdose, symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, depression, or seizures may occur, and immediate emergency treatment should be sought. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
