Adjunctive treatment of partial-onset seizures in patients with epilepsy aged 16 years and older
This medication is used as an adjunctive therapy for the treatment of partial-onset seizures, with or without secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, in patients with epilepsy aged 16 years and older. It helps to control the frequency and symptoms of seizures in addition to existing therapy. This assists in more effectively managing the patient's seizures.
This medication should be taken twice daily. The recommended initial dose is 50mg twice daily, and after 1 week it should be increased to 100mg twice daily. Depending on clinical response and tolerability, the maintenance dose may be increased each week by 50mg twice daily, up to the maximum recommended dose of 400mg/day (200mg twice daily). If treatment with this medication must be discontinued, gradual dose reduction is recommended. (e.g., gradually reduce the daily dose by 200mg each week) This medication may be taken with or without food. 1. Patients with renal impairment No dosage adjustment is required in patients with mild or moderate renal impairment (CLCR>30mL/min). A maximum dose of 300mg/day is recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (CLCR≤30mL/min) and those with end-stage renal disease. Since this medication is removed from plasma by hemodialysis, hemodialysis patients are recommended to receive an additional dose of up to 50% of the single dose immediately after hemodialysis. Treatment of patients with end-stage renal disease should be undertaken with caution because clinical experience is limited and a metabolite (whose pharmacological activity is unknown) may accumulate. Dosage adjustments should be made cautiously in all patients with renal impairment. 2. Patients with hepatic impairment Dosing should be undertaken with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. A maximum dose of 300mg/day is recommended for patients with mild or moderate hepatic impairment. Use is not recommended in patients with severe hepatic impairment. 3. Older adults Dose reduction is not required in older adults. Although experience with lacosamide use in older adults with epilepsy is limited, decreased renal clearance and increased AUC are associated with age and should be taken into consideration in older adults. (See the section on ‘Patients with renal impairment’)
Children and adolescents under 16 years of age: Use in these age groups is not recommended because data on the safety and efficacy of this medication in children and adolescents under 16 years of age are unavailable.
This medication is used to treat various conditions related to epilepsy. Patients taking this medication should be carefully monitored for any mental health issues that may arise, such as suicidal thoughts or behavior, depression, and mood changes. If there is an allergy to the active ingredient in this drug, it should not be used. Dizziness may occur, which increases the risk of falls and injuries, so caution is particularly important when starting this medication. Patients with heart problems or conduction disorders should undergo an electrocardiogram and follow the physician's instructions before taking this medication. This drug may exacerbate symptoms of depression or suicidal impulses, so both patients and caregivers should immediately inform healthcare professionals of any such symptoms. Rarely, serious hypersensitivity reactions affecting multiple organ systems accompanied by generalized skin rash may occur, so if a rash or fever develops, the medication should be stopped immediately, and medical attention should be sought. Common side effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, double vision, and these symptoms may improve over time. This drug may affect the ability to drive or operate hazardous machinery, so caution is necessary after taking it. Since this medication can interact with other medications, patients should be sure to inform their physician or pharmacist of any other medicines they are currently taking. Elderly patients can use this medication without special dosage adjustments, but caution is advised based on their physical condition. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established in children and adolescents under 16 years of age, so its use is not recommended in this population. During pregnancy, the risk to the fetus must be considered, and it should only be used when essential under a doctor's judgment. Breastfeeding women should stop nursing, as the medication can be transmitted to the baby through breast milk. In cases of overdose, there may be issues with the central nervous system and heart, so if an overdose is suspected, visit a medical facility immediately. This medication may cause psychological dependence, so it should be taken according to the physician's instructions, and the dosage should not be altered or discontinued arbitrarily. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
