Cefuroxime is an antibiotic effective against a wide range of bacteria, acting on both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It is particularly effective against various aerobic gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, as well as aerobic gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Proteus. It also has therapeutic effects against some anaerobic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and against Borrelia burgdorferi, a major causative agent of early Lyme disease. Cefuroxime is stable to beta-lactamases and is effective against resistant strains of ampicillin or amoxicillin. It is primarily used for upper respiratory infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, and tonsillitis, lower respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis, urogenital infections such as pyelonephritis and cystitis, and various skin and soft tissue infections. This medication is also effective for treating gonorrhea and early Lyme disease and improves various infectious diseases safely and effectively.
