Treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections
This medicine is effective against Streptococcus pyogenes, the primary pathogen of upper respiratory infections such as pharyngitis and tonsillitis, and is also used for treating otitis media and acute sinusitis. It helps manage secondary bacterial infections in acute bronchitis or exacerbation of acute bacterial symptoms in chronic bronchitis. It is effective for skin and soft tissue infections, particularly simple skin infections and abscesses. Additionally, it is used for treating uncomplicated urinary tract infections, such as cystitis. This medicine serves as a therapeutic agent that aids in improving symptoms associated with various bacterial infections.
○ Adults (13 years of age and older) 1) For pharyngitis and tonsillitis among upper respiratory tract infections, administer 500mg (potency) of cefprozil per dose every 24 hours; for acute sinusitis, administer 250mg (potency) or 500mg (potency) every 12 hours (a dose increase is needed for moderate or more severe infections). 2) For bacterial superinfection of acute bronchitis or bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis among lower respiratory tract infections, administer 500mg (potency) of this drug per dose every 12 hours. 3) For uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, administer 250mg (potency) of this drug per dose every 12 hours [or 500mg (potency) every 24 hours], or administer 500mg (potency) every 12 hours depending on symptoms. 4) For uncomplicated urinary tract infections, administer 500mg (potency) of this drug every 24 hours. <Duration of administration> Treatment is generally given for about 10 days; however, for pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A beta-hemolytic), administer for 10 days or longer. For uncomplicated cystitis, administer for about 7 days. ○ Patients with renal impairment 1) If creatinine clearance is 30~120mL/min, administer according to the standard dosage regimen above. 2) If creatinine clearance is 29mL/min or less, administer 50% of the standard dose at the standard dosing interval. However, some of this drug is removed by hemodialysis, so administer it after the hemodialysis session. Once reconstituted, store refrigerated and use within 14 days (syrup only).
○ Children (2~12 years) 1) For pharyngitis and tonsillitis among upper respiratory tract infections, administer 7.5mg (potency) per Kg of body weight per dose every 12 hours. 2) For uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, administer 20mg (potency) per Kg of body weight per dose every 24 hours. ○ Infants and children (6 months~12 years) For otitis media among upper respiratory tract infections, administer 15mg per Kg of body weight every 12 hours; for acute sinusitis, administer 7.5mg per Kg of body weight every 12 hours. However, for moderate or more severe infections requiring a dose increase, administer 15mg per Kg of body weight every 12 hours.
This medicine is a cephalosporin antibiotic and should be avoided in certain patients. For example, patients who have had allergic reactions to cephalosporins should not take this medication. Patients who are allergic to penicillin or other drugs should use it with caution. Some patients with penicillin allergies may also show allergic reactions to this medication. Severely ill patients or those with renal impairment should have their kidney function carefully monitored and may require dose adjustments. Rarely, allergic reactions such as skin rash or urticaria may also be seen, typically occurring within a few days of starting the medication and resolving upon discontinuation. Rare reports of neurological symptoms such as dizziness, headache, insomnia, and blood test results indicating leukopenia and elevated markers for renal function have also been documented. Care should be taken when this medication is combined with other cephalosporin antibiotics or certain diuretics as it can place stress on the kidneys. In pregnancy, it should be used only when necessary, and in breastfeeding, its effects on the baby are not known, so it should be used with caution. Safety and efficacy have not been established in infants under 6 months of age. Elderly patients may require dose adjustments due to potential declines in renal function. This medication can affect test results, so notify healthcare professionals if you are taking it during blood or urine tests. In cases of overdose, it is excreted through the kidneys, and patients with renal impairment may require dialysis. Finally, prolonged use of this medication may result in the development of resistant bacteria, so it is essential to take it for the minimum duration as directed by a physician.
