Improvement of asthma symptoms through the combination of a bronchodilator and inhaled corticosteroids.
Using a bronchodilator together with inhaled corticosteroids is very effective in the treatment of asthma. The bronchodilator relaxes the muscles of the airways, making breathing easier. In contrast, inhaled corticosteroids reduce inflammation, alleviating asthma symptoms and improving airway hyperreactivity. By using both medications together, asthma symptoms are managed more steadily, helping to prevent recurrence or worsening of symptoms. Patients can expect optimal therapeutic effects through regular use and proper inhalation technique. In conclusion, this combination therapy effectively treats asthma.
Adults and children over 12 years inhale 50 μg of salmeterol and 100 μg, 250 μg, or 500 μg of fluticasone propionate twice a day, depending on the severity of the disease.
Children aged 4 to 11 years should inhale 50 μg of salmeterol and 100 μg of fluticasone propionate twice a day. There are no available data on the use in children under 4 years.
This medication has the effect of dilating the airways for easier breathing, but it should not be used in serious or life-threatening acute asthma attacks. Fast-acting inhalers should be used for the relief of acute asthma symptoms, as this medication is not indicated for acute symptom treatment. Those with allergies to any components of this medication, as well as patients with cardiac arrhythmias, untreated infections, or severe bronchiectasis, should not use it. It should be used cautiously in patients with certain conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, or seizure disorders, with regular monitoring of blood glucose and potassium levels required. Serious side effects such as cough, wheezing, or bronchospasm may occur after inhalation; if symptoms arise, use should be stopped immediately and a doctor should be consulted. This medication can cause various side effects including oral candidiasis, hoarseness, headache, palpitations, muscle pain, skin rash, and more, so any unusual symptoms should be reported. Especially, it is important to rinse the mouth well after using fluticasone propionate to prevent oral candidiasis. This medication should be used gradually for asthma treatment, appropriate doses should be determined according to symptoms, and conditions should be monitored regularly. As it is not suitable for acute symptom relief, patients should always carry a fast-acting inhaler for use as necessary. Long-term use of high doses may lead to systemic side effects, so the minimum effective dose should be used, with regular check-ups recommended. Caution is needed when combining with other medications, especially beta-blockers, CYP3A4 inhibitors, and steroids. During pregnancy, it should only be used if absolutely necessary, considering the impact on the fetus; during breastfeeding, the risks and benefits regarding the newborn must be evaluated. Safety and efficacy should be carefully assessed in children and the elderly, particularly regarding growth delay and potential systemic side effects in children. Overdose may cause symptoms of cardiac and neurological abnormalities; immediate medical treatment should be sought. This medication is for inhalation use only and should not be ingested; after inhalation, rinse the mouth thoroughly to prevent oral infections. Furthermore, if asthma worsens, do not abruptly stop using; taper off gradually per the physician's instructions.
